Research* | Research: "James Calvert" was a famous Fijian Wesleyan missionary (1813-1892). He married a Mary Fowler (1814-1882). This James Calvert Fowler is related, or was named after the famous one. The Shipstones (his wife's family) were a practicing Wesleyan family. It appears that James Calvert was the brother-in-law of James Calvert Fowler's father - i.e. he was J.C. Fowler's aunt's husband on his father's side.2 | |

Addresses were afterwards delivered by the Rev. O.W. Simpson on the spread of Christianity in India, and by the Rev. James Calvert on the mission work in Fiji, in which he made an allusion to his voyage out with the celebrated John Hunt, and the difficulties which had to be encountered in introducing Methodism into Fiji and the Friendly Islands.10 |

(Subject) Newspaper | 6 August 1873 | James Calvert Fowler was the subject of a newspaper article on 6 August 1873. Wesleyan Methodist Conference Newcastle Monday ... Public Examination of Candidates This evening there were services at High West-street Chapel, Gateshead, at Blenheim-street Newcastle, and in Fawcett-street Chapel, Sunderland. The object of these services was to hear the candidates for ordination "give their experience." It is felt in some quarters that these experiences relate to things too sacred to be publicly reported, and the Rev.J.H. Hargreaves (Bradford) will give notice of motion in future the admittance to the public examination shall be restricted to communicants and "members of society" showing their tickets, and thus be an examination on the part of the church, and not of the world. ... Tuesday Morning's Sessions ... Candidates for Ordination The ordination services will be held tomorrow. The following probationers are to be ordained at the Sans-street Chapel, Sunderland:- James C. Fowler ... (note that he was actually ordained in Gateshead according to next day's paper).15 |
(Subject) Newspaper | 7 August 1873 | He was the subject of a newspaper article on 7 August 1873. Wesleyan Conference Ordination Service An ordination service was held yesterday morning in the High West Street Chapel, Gateshead. The body of the chapel was occupied by ministers, and a congregation, admitted by ticket, filled every part of the large building. After singing, prayer was offered by the Secretary (Rev. Gervase Smith, M.A.); the President (Rev. george T. Perks, M.A.) read selected passages of Holy Scripture, and the Secretary called over the names of the ministers to be ordained as follows: ... J.C. Fowler ... The President next addressed the candidates in the words of the Ordination Service, and they, in response to the usual questions, expressed belief that they were "inwardly moved by the Holy Ghost" to the office and work of the Christian ministry; and that the Holy Scriptures contain all doctrine necessary for salvation. They further assented to the Methodist doctrine and discipline, and said they were resolved to be faithful. On the invitation of the President, the congregation now joined in silent prayer. The President, the ex-President and Secretary of the Conference, with the Revs John Farrar and Dr. Jobson, then proceeded to ordain, by imposition of hands, the first group of young ministers. ... The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper having been administered to the ministers just ordained, the ex-President (Rev. L.H. Wiseman M.A.) ascended the pulpit, and addressed to them a charge founded on 1st Timothy, chap. 1 verse 14 - "Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, and the laying on of the hands of the presbytery." The delivery of the charge lasted an hour and twenty minutes, and not only was the deepest attention shown throughout by the entire congregation, but several times audible expression was given to their approval. The following is an outline of what was said : - ...(several hundred words of speech)... The ex-President concluded with a very powerful exhortation to the newly ordained ministers. A similar service was held at the same hour in Sans Street Chapel, Sunderland where the charge was delivered by the Rev. Dr. James (another list of young ministers who were ordained).16 |

Sadie Doris Gartside or Williams1
F, #2640, d. 12 December 2008
Married Name | between 1 October 1963 and 31 December 1963 | As of between 1 October 1963 and 31 December 1963, her married name was Shipstone.1 |
(Subject) Newspaper | 2 November 1970 | Sadie Doris Gartside or Williams was the subject of a newspaper article on 2 November 1970. Super Train Halts at The Pub for 20 Cigarettes The sleek 150 mph supertrain ground to a halt at the old village station. Out leapt one of the team who were testing it. He raced to the refreshment room and gasped "Twenty Cigarettes Please". Then he jumped back on the train - and off it went again. For the line was closed three years ago. The station - at Widmerpool, near Nottingham - was converted into a pub and restaurant. But now British Rail have re-opened the thirteen-mile stretch of line between Nottingham and Melton Mowbray to test their new prototype train. Scene Mrs. Sadie Shipstone, who helps run the converted station - now the Schooner Inn - said "It was like a scene from a Will Hay film. "The old station is in the middle of nowhere. It hasn't seen a train for months. "Then quite unexpectedly, four well-dressed chaps with rolled umbrellas turned up, presumably to watch the tests. "We expected the train to fly through. Instead, it stopped, the fellow jumped off and ran across for his cigarettes. He must have been gasping for a smoke." A British Rail spokesperson said "The track has been re-opened specifically to develop the new high speed train. Since there are no other users they can stop and start where they like. Indeed, stopping and starting will form part of the tests."2 |
