Research* | Research: STOP PRESS (Jun 2017) This child, Hilary Joan Gurteen - is not the daughter of Conrad Sharp Gurteen & Frances Vinter, but of Frank Gurteen & Mabel Vinter ... see comment on Wikitree There were two families of Gurteen = Vinter - both in the same Registration District and having children at the same time. Evidence: (from Chris Morris): I was interested to find that one of their probable daughters was Isabel Ann the mother of Charlotte Rampling. However, there was a problem in that the first four of the five Gurteen births registered with a Vinter-born mother in the small Risbridge district between 1915 and 1922 are far too close together for them to be children of the same parents (see freebmd.org.uk). I found that there was another marriage between a Gurteen and a Vinter in 1910 in Wharfedale district - Conrad Sharp Gurteen to Frances Annie Vinter (a cousin of Mabel's) and that this pair must be the parents of some of those Risbridge-born children. These Vinter cousins are not my relatives, so I decided to send for Isabel Ann's birth certificate to establish whether I was related to these famous Ramplings. The certificate arrived and proved that Isabel Ann was the daughter of Frank and Mabel Vinter. Unfortunately I seem to have mislaid this certificate - not with the rest of mine for some reason - but I will find it and send you a scan to an email when I do. Further light was thrown on the matter when the 1939 registrations became available. The Frank Gurteens and the Conrads were living next door to each other in Sturmer, Essex where Charlotte Rampling is known to have been born. This is not as helpful as might be thought, as people under 100 and not known to be dead are "redacted" until their death record becomes known to the people at FindMyPast, or until they turn 100. Since the penultimate entry under the Conrad Gurteens is of a servant, I assume both households had servants. The Franks have daughter Hilary (future name Darrah) and three redacted whom I assume are servants. The Conrads have four more redacted, which would mean that at least Stephen 1922 and possibly Arthur 1919 or even John 1916 are there. This will become clearer as more -people are "unredacted" over time. Isabel is not in this equation as she was already married to Godfrey Rampling - she can be found lodging at South Cliff, Tenby with Godfrey intercalated below. From the evidence I am clear that Frank and Mabel's children were William, Richard, Hilary and Isabel Anne between 1908 and 1918, and that Conrad and Frances's were John, Arthur and possibly Stephen between 1916 and 1922. I admit I can't yet be certain about Stephen's parentage - Mabel would turn 44 in 1922 but Frances was only a little younger." I'm very happy to accept this. They could all have been born with same mother ("quarter" registrations are not entirely accurate - several weeks allowable to register a birth, for example would make Q Jun 1918 & Q Mar 1919 possible), but they weren't. It's interesting that families generated in Ancestry and elsewhere have made the same mistake, and all assume all children were from either Conrad Sharp Gurteen or Frank William Gurteen ... FreeBMD 1915-1939 mother Vinter: (all Risbridge) Sep 1915 Gurteen: Hilary J. Frank W. (eldest with the family in 1939) Mar 1916 Gurteen: John V. (could be a closed entry with Frank W in 1939, but unlikely - say Conrad?) Jun 1918 Gurteen: Isabel A. birth certificate (allededly) states Frank W (in Tenby with Husband in 1939) Mar 1919 Gurteen: Arthur V. Conrad S. (eldest with the family in 1939) Sep 1922 Gurteen: Stephen (could be closed entry with Conrad S family in 1939?) So not all of these are from the same family, as I (and just about everyone else who was not close family) had supposed. Happy to go with Chris Morris suggestion, and associate Arthur and probably Stephen with Conrad, Hilary and Isabel with Frank. John V is also Conrad's - incoming passenger list 1934 New York to Southampton, student age 18, gives John Gurteen's address as "Woodlands Blowerhill Efflk" (Woodlands being Conrad's address, Frank W's is next door at "The Coupals" in 1939). Research* | Research: No other evidence for this Elizabeth. There is an Elizabeth of similar age in 1841 with a Joseph Harbutt (age 69) in Uppingham. This raises the question of whether Walter had a brother Joseph (and she was an actual Cousin of Robert as stated in 1861, and not his sister). Bit of uncertainty here. However, recent look at the baptism shows definitely Elizabeth Holmes Harbut (indexed as Herbert) and we can follow her story to 1880. | |
