How to Celebrate A Golden Wedding

The President of the Conference visited the town on Monday for a very interesting occasion. Mr. and Mrs. J. Shipstone, who for forty-two years have been the leading members and supporters of the pretty little suburban church of New Basford, in the Halifax-place Circuit, celebrated their golden wedding, and determined to commemorate the event by clearing the debt from the chapel. In the afternoon, the President gave an interesting address. He said he had never been at a golden wedding before; he had often heard of such celebrations, and heard of them with profound interest. As Chapel Secretary, people generally sent for him when they were in trouble, when they were in a hole and wanted to be helped out of it. He had to weep with those who wept. But during the last few months, as President, he had seen Methodism under another aspect, and had to rejoice with those who rejoiced. His views on Methodism had risen marvelously during his presidency. He commended the thought of showing gratitude for a long life of mercies by freeing God's house from debt. A tea was provided gratuitously in the schoolroom, to which a large number sat down. After teas, on behalf of the trustees, leaders and members of the church, the President presented Mr. and Mrs. Shipstone with a beautifully illuminated address in a handsome frame, in which reference was made to his son, Rev. John Shipstone, who died in Ceylon, and to his late father-in-law, Rev. James Calvert Fowler, and also to the generosity and devotion to the cause of himself and wife for so many years. Congratulatory addresses were delivered by Revs. J.V.B. Shrewsbury, R. Middleton, F.J. Murrell and H.H. Whiting. The dept in the chapel stood at £375. The Chapel Committee promised £75. A bazaar at Christmas realised £85. A collection was made at the services, and promises made, reducing the amount required to £120; this amount Mr. Shipstone promised, and the Doxology was heartily sung. This is the second chapel in the Halifax-circuit which within a year has been freed from debt. Only last October, £1,000 was raised to free the circuit chapel.

Mentioned John Shipstone and James Calvert Fowler.46

Note* "It is with the deepest regret I write of Christopher, my elder grandson, and only son of Mick and Pat, whose very promising short life ended very suddenly at Singapore, at the age of 19, in a motor car accident. He was then enlisted in the Royal Marines, and enjoying life to the full. His boundless energy and enthusiasm was almost out of this world. He was most popular with both his officers and men, who spoke most highly of his Christian character, and of his future prospects. The letters his father and mother received, although "no letters please", had been requested by the announcements in the papers, greatly comforted them, by all the glowing accounts of Christopher's successes. Christopher's parents have set a noble example by their conduct since their terrible loss, by carrying on, and in helping others. Mick and Pat have been wonderfully helped by their many friends, whose practical sympathy has meant a great deal to them. Christopher was laid to rest at Church Knowle, Dorset, the little church where Christopher, and his friends, and family, frequently worshipped. A memorial of some kind is being considered."4

Edwalton Wedding:
Naval Romance

A romance of the war years led to the marriage today, at Edwalton Parish Church, of Miss Patricia Elizabeth Snell, youngest daughter of Mrs. Eric and the late Sr. J. Eric B. Snell, of Edwalton Lodge, Edwalton, and granddaughter of the late Sir Thomas Shipstone, to Mr. Harry A. Donnan, third son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Donnan, of South Shore, Portaferry, Co. Down.

The officiating clergy were the Rev. R. J. W. Morris, assisted by Bishop J. R. Weller and the Rev. R. D. Weller.

The bride, who was given away by her brother, Dr. T. B. Snell, wore a dress of moss crepe with lace.

The bridesmaids were Miss J. A. Snell, sister of the bride, Miss V. Snell, niece of the bride and Miss Judy Morris, while master Duncan Ferguson acted as page. The best man was Mr. R. J. D. Dunford. Mr. Percy Allen was the organist. The reception was held at Edwalton Lodge.

The bride served for four-and-a-half years in the W.R.N.S., Royal Marines, Plymouth Division. The bridegroom, who also served in the Royal Marines throughout the war was one of the 33 survivors of H.M.S. Glorious which was sunk by the Scharnhorst in June 1940.

A "Good News" Story
Golden Wedding Celebration
Milestone in the life of Mr. and Mrs. James Shipstone

Long Eaton Lay Preacher's Record of Service

A young clerk employed by a firm of wines and spirit merchants at Eastwood used to make regular visits to the rectory on business, and it was there that he met a young nurse.

Their acquaintance developed, and for four years he courted this young Rectory nurse until one memorable day in 1889 - April 2, to be exact - the wedding bells rang
(picture labelled "Mr & Mrs James Shipstone")
out and they were married by the Rector, the late Rev. H. W. Plumtree, in the Eastwood Parish Church.

And so we come over the years and congratulate Mr. and Mrs. James Shipstone, of The Nest, Recreation-street, Long Eaton, who celebrated their golden wedding on Sunday, and now at 73 and 71 years of age respectively, are looking forward to the time when their diamond wedding day will dawn.

Mr. Shipstone, who is a cousin of Sir Thomas Shipstone, of Midland Brewery fame (#), can be described as one of the best-known Nonconformists in this district. He is - as an example of this - a very familiar figure at local funerals, for during his many years' association with Long Eaton he has conducted well over 500 burials in his capacity as a lay preacher.

Born at New Basford

A native of New Basford, Nottingham, he was taken to Eastwood as a child, and was "schooled" at the local National School, later becoming a time-keeper with a Nottingham hosiery manufacturing firm.

As a young man he went back to Eastwood, and was employed in the wines and spirits business for nine years, but throughout his life has always been a strong supporter of temperance, his principles in this direction leading to his association with local Bands of Hope in days gone by.

Mr. and Mrs. Shipstone came to Long Eaton nearly 47 years ago, when he was appointed as the local agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Co., Ltd. Some years later he moved into the Stapleford and Sandiacre district to become Assistant District Superintendent of the company, and during the latter part of the war, he was in charge of the Ilkeston and Long eaton district.

In 1919 Mr. Shipstone was transferred back to this town and served as manager-salesman until his retirement in 1930, after being in the company's service for 38 years.

A Local Preacher

That's his business history, but perhaps ist is in connection with local Methodism that Long Eaton knows his best.

As soon as he arrived in this district, he became associated with the Bourne Methodist Church, of which he has been a prominent member for nearly half a century.

He was on the Chapel Trust Committee, assistant superintendent of the Sunday School years ago, class leader for 33 years and a most esteemed local preacher for 45 years in the Long Eaton Bourne Primitive Methodist Circuit.

It was only natural that while at Sandiacre he should attend the old Primitive Methodist Church, which has given way before the march of modern progress and is now a firm's premises. He was only at Sandiacre for seven years, yet in that time held similar offices to those he has filled at Bourne.

That his services in the local religious world are appreciated was fully realised by his election to the presidency of the Long Eaton Free Church Council, a position he held for the customary period of one year.

Mrs. Shipstone may not have been in the public eye so much, but one must remember that she has been the person who has made much of Mr. Shipstone's work possible. They have had ten children, five of whom are living.

The great milestone in their married life was recorded by a little family celebration at the home on Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Shipstone, both of whom enjoy good health, have received many telegrams of congratulation and good wishes, including messages from the members of the Bourne Church and Professor P. Ford (Professor of Economics for Southampton University) and family, who are old friends of the Shipstone family.

Townspeople, generally, will join with us in extending our felicitations to this veteran and highly respected Long Eaton couple, with a hope that they will continue to enjoy the best of health and fortune.

# Midland Brewery Fame? Surely " a Midland brewery of fame - Shipstones". Slip of the pen ... no evidence that James Shipstone owned Midland Brewery (though they did acquire it in 1954).28
