Resch Note*after 20 February 1938 Research Note:
If husband and wife died one day after each other (as apparently the case with Jonathan & Eliza Leivers), and in the same quarter, surely they should share the same address?

Jonathan R.D. Shardlow,
Eliza R.D. Belper.

Perhaps one died in hospital (Jonathan did, Eliza died at home)

And presumably they share the grave with their uncle because
a) he died first and
b) had no children, just a wife,
c) he was still living in Greasley, and had a handy plot with space left.
d) the rest of the family had to do something in a hurry as they both died together.

Looks very convenient for them!13

Joseph LEIVERS

M, #617, b. circa 1731
Relationship5th great-grandfather of Philip John CHAMBERLAIN
ChartsAncestors of Lilian Clifton
Descendants of Joseph Leivers
Justification* Justification:
I have not included possibe parents here. There are a number of candidates:

24 Dec 1727 Jobo s of John LEIVERS & Martha his wife bap
25 Nov 1735 Joseph s. of Joseph & Elizabeth LEEVARS bap

Henry Leiver & Mary Severn
Joseph & Elizabeth

were also having children around this time.

Not enough evidence to nail any particular one of them.

Other have managed to create wonderful ancestries for "this" Joseph. This would be nice, but I remain to be convinced.1

Resch Note22 February 1781 Research Note:
There is a burial of a Joseph Levers on this date (no age at death given)
I do not think it is this Joseph Levers, as his son is buried in 1788 as "Joseph Levers junior" - only used if the "senior" is still alive.
There is a later burial which has an approximately likely age at death for this Joseph.
Also, when his wife is buried, she is named as "wife of Joseph Leivers" - i.e. he is still living in 1811.5

(Interred) Burial*13 January 1817 Joseph LEIVERS was buried on 13 January 1817 at Greasley, NTT, "Josh. LIEVERS, Newthorpe, age 86."5

Resch Note*between 1783 and 1841 Research Note: at Greasley, NTT,
Plenty of "Joseph Leivers" Action!!

There is a marriage :
Joseph Levers (x) = Hannah Hatherly (x)
Both of this parish
In church after banns
20 Apr 1783
Wit: Wm Hatherly (x), John Mansell

But I do not think it is this Joseph.
Why?
Because Joseph & Hannah have the following children:

30 May 1784 Sarah
05 Feb 1786 Ann
16 Nov 1788 Louisa
13 Mar 1791 Millicent
02 Jun 1793 Hannah

So the one who married Hannah cannot have been buried in 1788 age 29.

As we also have a Joseph who died 1845 age 84 - the one who married Hannah is more likely to be him.

Note that there is a 1793 marriage:
Joseph Levers (x) = Martha Blakenor (x)
Both of this parish
In church after banns
12 Nov 1793
Wit: Joseph Large, John Mansell

As John Mansell is also a witness, this could be the same Joseph, but there is no Hannah Leivers burial in 1793.

28 JUL 1794 Betty d. Joseph & Martha LEVERS

08 Apr 1796 Thomas s. Joseph Leevars & Martha - Eastwood
26 OCT 1797 Docy (Alias Theodosia) d. Joseph & Martha LEEVERS - Eastwood
24 Dec 1799 Nancy d. Joseph Leivers & Martha - Eastwood

And another Joseph steps in and has children:
09 SEP 1794 Joseph & John twins of Joseph & Mary LEVERS

There is a burial of Joseph Leivers 1797 - but I recorded no age!

There is a burial on 22 Apr 1828 of a Joseph LIEVERS, Newthorpe, age 70.
10 years older than this Joseph Leivers.
There is a burial on 20 Oct 1845 of a Joseph LIEVERS, Newthorpe, age 84.
3 years younger than this Joseph Leivers.
Noted as "Joseph Leivers, joiner age 80", living in same house as William & Hannah Pettinger (both age 41) in 1841 census.

So lots of "Joseph Leivers" activity which may or may not be associated with son of Joseph & Mary bapt. 1758

I think the "junior" mentions in his burial, and his exact age, gives me positive indication it is this Joseph, who had a father Joseph living at the time.3,2

(Interred) Burial*29 March 1788 Joseph Leivers was buried on 29 March 1788 at Greasley, NTT, Joseph LEVERS junior, aged 29 (implies that Senior, his father, is still alive).4

A coming World's Champion?

Wonderful Achievements by Youthful Swimmer

Son of Greasley Native

(Picture)

We have previously had occasion to refer to the remarkable swimming achievements of Bob Leivers, the 15-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Hanford Leivers, of Longton, Staffs., and formerly of Greasley. This youthful aquatic wonder has recently been honoured by being selected to represent England against the Belgian crack International swimmer, Henri de Pauw, whom he defeated in Birmingham and again at Stourbridge.

Bob Leivers, whose photograph, together with some of the honours achieved, we are able to publish, was fifteen years of age on Dec 27th last. He was born at Bulwell, and is a direct descendant of an old Hill Top family, his father and grandfather both being born in the parish of Greasley.

By many swimming experts, including the Belgian, he is regarded as a coming English champion and probably a world champion. At the present time he is recognised as the finest boy crawler in England, and has by invitation been given exhibitions of the famous crawl stroke in various public baths this summer.

Here are a few of his present season's accomplishments: - On July 5th he swam at the Smallheath open-air baths in the English 500 yards championship, and came on fourth, beating T. Scott (the English Olympic representative) by 11 yards.

In the 440 yards Northern Counties Championship meeting at Southport open-air baths he gain secured fourth place six yards in front of Scott.

On July 15th he won the 220 yards Staffordshire championship in 2 mins. 36 secs., beating the previous record by six seconds.

He narrowly missed the 100 yards Northern Counties junior championship at Southport on Aug. 14th by one-fifth of a second, his time being 62 3-5th secs., whereas hew won his heat in 61 1-5th secs.

At Rhyl on Aug. 30th, he won the 100 metres open to All England race, beating Fred Bramhall (the English and Northern Counties 880 yards champion) by 2 yards.

On Sept. 3rd he captured the 100 yards Staffordshire championship in 62 2-5th secs., beating all previous records in the process.

It was as recently as Sept. 25th last that he represented England in a team to meet the Belgian representative swimmers at Birmingham, already referred to earlier in this article. Bob Leivers was selected to swim in the 220 yards event against Henri de Pauw (the Belgian free style champion for 50 to 500 metres and International representative), whom he beat by ten yards in 2 mins. 26 secs. Two days later Leivers repeated his victory over the Belgian at Stourbridge by one yard, beating his own previous time be a fraction over six seconds.

His latest success was on Sept. 29th, at Tunstall, where for the second year in succession he secured the 100 yards junior championship (under 21 years) of Stoke-on-Trent in 64 2-5th secs., but he had previously covered this distance in practice in four seconds less time, proving that he was never fully extended in the championship race.

On Monday night of the present week, at the Longton Amateur Swimming Club's annual gala, Leivers lowered two club records set up by himself the previous year, reducing the time for the two lengths junior club championship from 1 min. 41 secs. to 1 min. 32 3-5th secs.

Bob Leivers, whose progress in the swimming world will be closely followed by many Eastwood friends and acquaintances of the father, is a pupil of Prof. Laverty, the Northern coach, and is tutored by Bert Bentley, the Longton Swimming Club secretary, who has worked well for the progress and success of his pupil.4

Resch Note*1932 Research Note:
Robert "Bob" Thomas Hanford Leivers (27 December 1914 – 28 August 1964) was an English freestyle swimmer who competed for Great Britain in the 1932 Summer Olympics and in the 1936 Summer Olympics.

He was born in Nottingham and died in Chelsea, London.

In 1932 he finished fifth with the British relay team in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay event. He also participated in the 400 metre freestyle competition was eliminated in the first round.

Four years later he was a member of the British relay team which finished sixth in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay contest. He also finished sixth in the 1500 metre freestyle event and seventh in the 400 metre freestyle competition.

At the British Empire Games in 1934 he won a silver medal as part of the English team in the 2×220 yards relay race. In 1938 he won the 1500 yards contest and finished second in the 400 yards event and as member of the English relay team he won his second gold medal.

During his athletic years he was famous for his friendly rivalry with fellow Potteries swimmer Norman Wainwright; they both trained at Longton Swimming Baths, which have now been demolished.

Bob lived in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire where he ran the family business, Leivers Butchers with shops in Longton, Staffordshire and Meir, Staffordshire. He married Winifred May Leivers (née Degg) and fathered two children; Patricia Ann McLaughlin (née Leivers) and Robert Thomas Hanford Leivers.2,5,6

Olympic Games Foreshadowed

Will Britain Surprise France?

Bob Leivers the Hope of Britain

Mr. John Hodgson, the English representative of the Olympic Games Management (swimming) Committee, writing in the "Liverpool Weekly Post", last Saturday, makes some comments regarding the approaching Olympic Games at Los Angeles, and offers some caustic remarks and criticism concerning a certain Frenchman's approved list of world swimmers whose chance of success were most fancied.

The French idol, Jean Taris, is fancied for the 440 metres, and there is no mention of a British swimmer in his list. Mr. Hodgson holds a different view, and goes on to say: Those responsible for preparing the British swimming team have no desire to advertise their work. A large number of young men and women have been urged to spend winter months keeping themselves fit, and they are doing so. Time will show they are not "mugs" in swimming ability.

A Future Champion.

There is no breach of confidence in saying that Bob Leivers is making such headway in his winter training, even under severe check, that all predictions of who will win the 400 metres crown at Los Angeles may have to be revised.

Bob Leivers, is the clever young Longton swimmer, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hanford Leivers, formerly of Eastwood, whose successes we have repeatedly chronicled in this journal.

Mr. Hodgson goes on to say eighteen months ago he was unknown outside his school. He entered a few races, including championships, and met with a little success, but it did not require much judgment to realise that Leivers was destined to make swimming history.

In 1931 he won the Northern 440 yards championship at Southport, setting such a pace that N. S. Brooks, the holder, retired at half distance. Two days later he appeared at Weston-super-Mare, to finish second in the 500 yards' national championship against seasoned opponents, a contest which drew comments about David and Goliath. In October he went to Wallasey baths, and wiped from the record books, a time for 400 yards made by the world-famous Arne Borg, of Sweden.

Hope for Britain

A letter form his coach at Langton, Mr. B. Bentley, contains this remark: - "I wonder if the swimmers of England realise what a treasure they have in Bob. He is training like a greyhound at the leash for work, and the other day, swimming easy, he broke the 440 yards record."

Here, then, is a real British hope, the danger to Jean Taris and other foreign aspirants for Olympic honours. Sir Harold Bowden, chairman of the British Olympic Council, has stated that the Games will mean much to British prestige outside sport. Our young men and women are greatly in need of encouragement in their efforts to raise national prestige, and when we have such athletes of promise as Bob Leivers they cannot be too strongly supported.7

"Keep news from son" - Father's Dying Wish

Famous Swimmer Will be Told After Empire Games

The death has occurred of the father of Bob Leivers, the famous Olympic swimmer, who is now in Sydney, Australia, for the Empire Games.

Mr. Hanford Leivers died at his home at Blythe Bridge, Stoke-on-trent, and his last wish was that his death should not be communicated to his son until after the Empire Games.

This wish the widow and family have decided to respect.

The late Mr. Leivers, who was 55 years of age, went to North Staffordshire in 1920 from Eastwood, Notts.

He was well known as an athlete in Nottinghamshire, where he played cricket for the Langley Mill club.11

Black-Out Accident Sequels

Woman Knocked Down

In the third case, Robert Hanford Leivers, of Mostyn, Uttoxeter Road, Blythe Bridge, was fined £1 and ordered to pay 17s. 6d. costs.

Evidence was given that while turning into Heathcote-road, Longton, Leivers collided with two women on a pedestrian crossing. Alice Boult, of 230 Stone-road, Longton, said she was thrown to the ground by the impact, and Doris Barnes, of Summer-row, Longton, said she clung to the front of the car and was carried a short distance.

Defendant who pleaded Not Guilty, was represented by Mr. F. H. Woolliscroft, who said it was very dark and visibility was only a few yards. There was some contributory negligence on the part of the pedestrians.

Defendant, in evidence, said he stopped three yards from the crossing to allow a cyclist to pass. He then proceeded slowly. He pulled up on the crossing.14

Jun 1890 RD Basford: Charlotte Ann Jepson
Jun 1890 RD Basford: Sarah Phillips or Eliza Webster

We know he marries a Sarah by 1894, so must be Sarah Phillips..?

Resch Notebetween 1 October 1892 and 31 December 1892 Research Note: at R.D. Basford
Sarah Leivers age 33 died in R.D. Basford.
This is the only Sarah Leivers, and age fits the evidence.
I therefore assume this is the death of William's second wife.

Probably as the result of childbirth/pregancy complication?14

Had a Sonbetween 1 October 1892 and 31 December 1892 His son William Leivers was born between 1 October 1892 and 31 December 1892 at R.D. Basford.4
Resch Note1894 Research Note:
After the death of his second wife, William Marries another Sarah in 1894, who was born in Langley Mill (co-incidentally like Bryan Leivers, son from second marriage).

3 possible Sarah's (1891-1901) for this third marriage Sarah Needham (Mar 1894) R.D. Basford
Sarah Gent or Sarah Ann Merriot (Jun 1894). R.D. Basford

The Sarah with this William in 1891 was born 1867 in Langley Mill, DBY. As this is the same place as "Bryan", and there was a Sarah Needham born in Langley Mill in 1866, I am prepared to go with Sarah Needham (until other evidence become available).7
