Research Research: I think I am right here, but was not 100% convinced (until, I had the baptism and burial records).

There is an Edwin Moses Morley (married to an Elizabeth, and born in Nottingham, - as Moses Edwin) who died in Mansfield around 1910. As this is a rare Edwin Morley of around the right age, this is a fair (but incorrect) assumption. Familysearch had Moses Edwin Morley bapt of Charles & Elizabeth in Nottm St Peter 29 Jun 1845

I do not believe that this Edwin - of Zaphnath and Mary - is the one born in Nottingham.

Parents marriage in Greasley

However, something still not quite right, as his age at death and inconsistency with Edwin and Edward are concerning.

The child born 1844 was recorded as Edward (mother Chambers).

The Edwin who married Martha Clifton had a father Zaph.

Edwin had died by 1881 (as Martha was a widow then). It is the same woman, as she is with their child (Thomas Edwin Morley).
There is no Edwin death between 1871 and 1881, just an Edward, whose age is approximately right, and martial status reported at the pit accident is right. Martha is described as an annuitant widow in 1881 - i.e. she is receiving some kind of pension - which is consistent with a pit death where owners were responsible.

Certificates or baptisms clearly showing the parentage of "Edwin/Edward" would help. It does, and shows Edwin of Zaphnath.
Census and marriage is the main clue that Zaphnath is his father.

If only he had recorded his name as "Edward" on marriage and in census (and gave right age at death), then all would have been well...probably his work records whiuch cemented his name and age at death, as he died in a pit accident (and challenging those personal facts may have resulted in no compensation).

So I am now happy we have the right parentage here.

Explosion on HMS "Terrible"
One man killed and five injured

The Terrible, first-class cruiser , Captain C. G. Robinson arrived in Plymouth Sound on Wednesday morning and immediately she had anchored a boat and was shore, and a report made to the Commander-in-Chief (Admiral the Hon. Sir E. Fremantle) of a sad accident that had occurred on board during the homeward voyage from Gibraltar.

....

The Ship at Portsmouth

Coroners inquest; Account by an Engineer Officer

...

On the return of the Jury, Mr. Harold Squire morley, assistant engineer on the Terrible (lent for duty), said he was in the stoke-room when the accident happened. He was in charge at the time. The ship is equipped with the Belleville water-tube boilers. Gibraltar was left on Saturday night; and they not quite reached the Bay of Biscay when the accident occurred, caused by the burning of one of the tubes. The vessel at the time was steaming 13.5 to 14 knots. Witness have the order to "draw fires"; and to do this it was necessary to open the furnace door. It was in consequence of hearing a hissing noise that he gave the order. When witness first went to the boiler he thought the lead safety-plug was gone; but on opening the smoke-box, he found it was not so. Sometimes these plugs would give out when everything was all right. Being unable to locate the leak, he issued the order to draw fires. The deceased proceeded to open the starboard wing door, and upon this the tube burst, and, the steam escaping, carried the flame across the stoke-hold. The boiler contained a number of tubes, and the one which burst was known as a welded one, as distinguished from a solid drawn one. After using for some time, a welded tube would probably have been perfectly safe had no latent defect been present. Witness was about two feet away from Sullivan when the explosion took place. The boilers were tested up to 260lb. pressure; and the indicator showed 180 at the time of the accident. He saw the deceased turn to runaway, but did not afterwards recognise him until he was in the sick-bay. Witness proceeded to shut off the boiler, and it was a minute or so before the deceased knew he was injured. All the men made their escape rapidly. Witness was hurrying to shut off the stop-valve above the tube which has burst, but found someone there doing so. All the boilers were connected, and the steam from the others would rush through the damaged tube unless disconnected by the stop-valve. he thought the accident arose through the deterioration of the metal forming the tube.
By the Foreman: Four other tubes during the past three weeks had burst before the one in question. He put it down to the deterioration of the metal. The tubes were periodically inspected. All the burst tubes were, he believed, welded. Welded tubes were joined together, but the others were drawn out solid. the damaged tubes still remain in the boilers. It was an unusually large number of tubes to burst within the period.
By Mr. Harvey: It was the proper course to adopt to rake the fires before disconnecting the boiler. The water test of the tun was 1000lb. to the square inch, and the boiler , when completed, was tested to 360lbs.

The coroner here adjourned the inquiry until the 28th inst at 2.30pm.6

No death record before 1891, but not with family after 1883.

Suggest probably died (very close to birth), as did not inherit in 1927.

Or - as all the other were baptised apart from Herbert, could this in fact be Herbert's late baptism?

Researchbetween 1 April 1924 and 30 June 1924 Research: Death of a Nora Morton, West Derby, age 36 - probably the one married to the Herbert of York.
Research*1927 Research: Probably the "Herbert Varley" referenced in the Estate of Joseph Bingham. This entry has the same share as Herbert's siblings, but has the "wrong" surname.
Possible explanations:

1) Adopted by younger married sister(unlikely)
2) Dies but fathers a child illigitimately by Miss Varley called "Herbert"
3) He left England in his early 20's and was never seen again - his "status" was not known (he could simply have died) and his relatives giving the information got his name wrong.
4) He married and had a daughter, who married Mr Varley and they had a son Herbert (with no other issue from either couple). She died before 1927.
5) He was adopted and took their surname. His sister Rita was adopted (by Gibson family).
6) A mistake - there were lots of names to research, and the rest is remarkably accurate.

The latter is the most likely explanation.13
(Distribution) Will13 September 1927 Herbert Morton was named as Herbert Varley, 1/264 share worth $33.79 (note - should be Herbert Morton, unless he was adopted by his younger married sister!) In the distribution account for the Estate of Joseph Bingham dated 13 September 1927 Others named in the distribution include: William Bingham, Ellen Bingham, Emily Bingham, Myra Bingham, Frank Edward Finney, Harriet Elizabeth Finney, Albert Finney, Alfred Finney, Mary Jane Pettinger, Henry Pettinger, Arthur Pettinger, Fred Pettinger, Bertie Pettinger, Frank Pettinger, William Bingham, Elizabeth Bingham, Ann Bingham, Edward Bingham, George Bingham, Mary Emma Bingham, Charles Bingham, Elizabeth Bingham, Walter Bingham, Edward Bingham, Martha Bingham, George Bingham, John Charles Bingham, Alice Bingham, George Bingham, Mary Elizabeth Bingham, Sarah Ann Bingham, Ellen Maria Bingham, Rebecca Bingham, Lillie Morton, Frank Morton, Rita Smith Morton, Herbert Morton, Charlotte Smith, Ellen Smith, Elizabeth Cooper, Florence Elizabeth Darwent, William Darwent, Mary Ann Darwent, George Darwent, Agatha Ann Shipstone, Elizabeth Ann Shipstone, John William Shipstone, Rebecca Shipstone, Thomas Arthur Shipstone, Norman Bert Shipstone, James Ernest Shipstone, Martha Ann Shipstone, Edith Alice Shipstone, Jane Elizabeth Shipstone, Ellen Rebecca Shipstone, Maggie Stapleton Shipstone, Leslie William Shipstone, John Thompson, Elizabeth Thompson, George Thompson, Martha Thompson, Enid Thornton, Beach Thornton, Edith Thompson, James Bingham, Jane Elizabeth Bingham, Thomas Bingham, Lily Bingham, Sarah Ann Bingham, William Frederick Bingham, James Bingham, William Wallace Wright, Lucy Eleanor Wright, Frances Annie Shipstone Wright, Lawrence Wright, Gladys Maria Wright, Martha SHIPSTONE, Elizabeth Ann Shipstone, Harold Shipstone, Ethel Shipstone, Florence Shipstone, Ilford Rhoda Shipstone, Jane Elizabeth Sandy, Gordon Henry Sandy, Fanny Sandy, Eva Sandy, Carl Sandy, Leonard Sandy, Louie Sandy, James Shipstone, Julia Ann Shipstone, Walter Williamson Noton, Isaac Noton, Frank Arnold Noton, Jennie Noton, Bernard Noton, Grace Elizabeth Noton, Olive Saxby, George Saxby, Sarah Ann Noton, Emily Noton, Alfred Noton, William Edwin Noton, John Henry Bingham, George William Bingham, Charles Bingham, Henry Bingham, Emily Bingham, Adelaide Noton and Grace Sandy.13
Research1939 Research: at 41-45 Shaw Street, Liverpool North, LAN, Found a Herbert Morton male born 16 Apr 1878, widow, corporation road cleaner (on his own).

This is likely the "Liverpool Herbert" not the York one.14
Researchbetween 1 October 1953 and 31 December 1953 Research: at R.D. Liverpool North Age 73 - possible death, though there is one aged 12 in 1891 with parents Hiram and Rachel in Liverpool.
This death likely therefore to belong to the Herbert born in Liverpool not York.

Research*between September 1893 and May 1895 Research: James & Ann's oldest child Lilly is living with her grandparents in 1881 and remains there in 1891, marrying in Worksop, NTT in Dec 1894.

James & Ann's last child Rita is born in 1890.

Alice Ann Morton, eldest of James' daughters marries in March 1893.

Then a very unfortunate time for the family.

Firstly Rose Rebecca - 6 months after witnessing Ann's marriage - dies in September 1893, and is buried in a public grave.

Then William Henry dies of pthyisis in December.
Father James Morton purchases a private plot to bury William Henry in.

Perhaps he realised his own time is nigh, as he himself died of tuberculosis 3 months later in March 1894, and is buried in the same grave.

Ann his widow has to move to Alma Terrace (presumably with lower rent, and possibly trying to get away from TB!) and hold the remaining family together with no obvious breadwinner.

Only a matter of weeks later, Ann herself died - May 1894 - age 48, leaving a young family behind in York.

It is not certain that she is buried in the same grave as her husband - perhaps the children didn't know what had been purchased (having lost eldest brother, sister and both parents within 8 months.

Fortunately, Alice Ann (now Woodward) appears to be in York to help out, and has children in York before settling in Bridlington with her husband.

The children remaining at home in 1894 would be:
Walter age 16
Herbert age 14
Frank age 13
Rita age 3

In the next census - 7 years later - it appears that Rita, Walter and Frank are living in the household of Mr. Gibson, Rita described as "adopted daughter".
Mr. Gibson seems to have played a good samaritan role of looking after this Morton family.

Herbert is found in Croft, YKS in 1901 (near Leeds).

Occupation* Sarah Mosley was a Parish Relief, Housekpr.1,2
Research* Research: There are a number of inconsistencies between the data in these events. Was this Sarah the one who was at the workhouse? If so, was she the woman featured in the letter of May 24 1838? Was the information about the money paid for "midwifery" actual (or was it made up for the "workhouse visitor story", like other information)? Was she actually married? She says not on her marriage to James Bingham, and there is a Sarah Mosley baptised at the right time and place to be her.
Are the children hers which are in the census? Described as sons-in-law. If they were illegitimate, they would still be the siblings of Joseph Bingham and inherit part of his Estate... if anyone knew about them, of course!
Real question - is the lady in the workhouse the same Sarah as the one who married James Bingham 2 year's later?
Birth*before 23 October 1808 Sarah Mosley was born before 23 October 1808 at Farnsfield, NTT.3
(Child) Baptism23 October 1808 She was baptised on 23 October 1808 at The Parish Church of St. Michael, Farnsfield, NTT, Sarah dr. James & Martha Mosley, labourer.4
Research23 October 1808 Research: at Farnsfield, NTT, Baptism of a Sarah Mosley in Farnsfield to James & Martha Mosley (according to IGI). Assuming her maiden name was Mosley...

Father's name matches that stated on the marriage certificate.5
Had a Son1832 Her son William Mosley was born in 1832 at NTT.6
Had a Son1835 Her son John Mosley was born in 1835 at Farnsfield, NTT
Interesting*between 1838 and 1851  Sarah Mosley and sons cartoon characters in Southwell Workhouse!

All of us will have "everyday" folks in our trees who have had hard times. This is one such example (of many).

Sarah Mosley married my 3 x great grandfather (James Bingham) and their son Joseph Bingham started my interest in Family History (see his "interesting tale" 1927).

When I visited the Southwell Workhouse in the early 2000's (and again in 2009), there were some illustrative cartoons for children's trail and trail leaflet.

These showed William Mosley age 9, with his brother John Mosley age 6 and their mother Sarah (a servant). Sarah (pregnant again and her employer does not want to feed another servant's child) with her sons in the workhouse, and described how they would be treated (for the benefit of visiting children).

I had to do a double-take - this appeared to match the information I had about this Sarah Mosley and her sons ... William age 9 and John aged 6 in 1841 (John age 15 and Richard age 12 found with her in 1851 census). I think they must have used the same 1841 census information which I had for "my" Sarah and her family!

That is, someone had taken my relatives and turned them into (has to be said not very flattering, but very evocative) cartoons for public view!

I mean .. how often does that happen??

OK with a bit more digging, there are bits and pieces of the story which do not exactly fit "my" Sarah Mosley - she was not actually married (as stated in 1838 letter), but that may have been a fabrication in any case to cover the fact she had children outside formal marriage.

What I think is clear is that my Sarah Mosley did enter the workhouse and was there in 1841 before marrying my 3x gt-grandfather, and had 2 boys of hers with them in 1841 and 1851 census (and in is poor relief again when her husband died in 1850).

Some of the bits about (an "unnamed female inmate") perhaps having a relationship with the governor on a "day out" from the workhouse may have been amalgamated with another story to produce a "better tale" from the workhouse records.

Though unrelated to myself I have added her children in too, as I have their drawings ... (though Sarah and her boys are unrelated directly to me).

A bit of interest here in that someone made drawings out of Sarah and her children (for education purposes), but their life was one we would not like to inhabit today.

You've just arrived at the workhouse. ...
You and john are split up from your mother here. The Master tells you that you are to look after John as he is only small, and to make sure he behaves well and learns his lessons.

The Master sends you two to the Chidren's area of the Workhouse.

Your mother is sent to the able-bodied Women's area of the workhouse. You will only see her once a week while you are living in the workhouse - if you and she behave well!

You are William Moseley, aged 9.
You are with your mother, Sarah and your brother John age 6.

Your mother was a servant in a house in Southwell. Nobody knows who your father is, but John's father is a local drunk. Your mum has lost her job because she is pregnant again and her employer doesn't want to feed another servant's child with his hard-earned cash. You've ended up in the workhouse because there's nonody else to look after all of you.

The sooner you get a job the better!
Research24 May 1838 Research: at Southwell Union Workhouse, Upton, Southwell, NTT, Letter from Thomas Marriott, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union, to the Poor Law Commission "a woman deserted by her husband has been in the workhouse ever since the information of this union and for some time previous with two children, one whose legitimacy is not doubted and another born in the workhouse long since the desertion of her husband. The woman has been great deal employed in the kitchen of the workhouse by the governor and has been indulged much more than the other paupers. This woman appears now to be again pregnant (and there is no reason to believe that she has had any connexion with her husband) and was suffered by the governor to go away with her youngest child on the 14th May leaving the eldest child now 6 years old in the house. On the day of her going away the governor was absent for the day , which he accounts for by saying that he was at the Newark fair, that he was always taken such occasional absences without considering it necessary to ask the leave of the board.
Suspicious rumours having got aboard as to the paternity of the child of which the woman is now pregnant, some enquires have been made about it. The governor states that the woman was absent on Wednesday after last Martinmas by his leave to go to Newark fair, when he obtained permission of his wife who was also at the fair to stay all night, and he insinuates that she then became pregnant by the man who said to be the child of which she was delivered in the workhouse."

Is this our Sarah?

She nor the children are named, but one in 6 years old in 1838 and the other was born in the workhouse. It states whe was married (this may have been a falsehood - we do not know), so there are slim circumsrtantials here ... but what is there tells a story ...7
Research5 June 1838 Research: Letter from Clerk of Guardians of the Workhouse to the Poor Law Commission.

That the resignation of the workhouse master and workhouse matron of the workhouse, to take effect on June 23, should be accepted. The clerk will advertise for another workhouse master and workhouse matron. The salary will be £50 and the provisions of the house.

(this resignation come shortly after and could have been due to the events related above regarding a woman inmate - who might have seen Sarah ...)8

Had a Sonbetween 1 July 1838 and 30 September 1838 Her son Richard Mosley was born between 1 July 1838 and 30 September 1838 at R.D. Chesterfield.9
Research1839 Research: at Southwell Union Workhouse, Upton, Southwell, NTT, "Sarah Mosley aged 33 years entered the workhouse pregnant, with two children 10 shillings and sixpence to be paid to the medical officer for midwifery by the order of the master.

The board of guardians ordered father of John Mosley should be found and made to pay for not maintaining his wife and child."

Is this our Sarah? Ages don't exactly match, she has a Richard (not a John - unless this refers to the younger child she came in with, John bn 1835) whilst in the workshouse and if story of having a husband is true (it probably isn't), then this is not "our" Sarah.

It could well be this family though. Happy to put 2 and 2 together and make 5 for once.10
(Enum alone) Cen-Househ6 June 1841 The 1841 UK Census of Southwell Union Workhouse, Upton, Southwell, NTT, listed Sarah Mosley described as Sarah Mosley found in Southwell district Union workhouse, age 33, servant, born in NTT (almost certainly an inmate like all those listed apart from the Governor and his family). Also in the institution, listed amongst the child inmates, were Willm. Mosley age 9 & John Mosley age 6 no relationship shown, as no family groupings nor relationships were shown Southwell District Union Workhouse, Thomas Wightman, the Governor. It is possible that there is no relationship between Sarah Mosley and the 2 Mosley children. As they appear with her in the 1851 census, then I think we can make an assumption ...6

(Head) Cen-Househ*30 March 1851 She was head of the household in the 1851 UK Census of Boughton, NTT, as Sarah Bingham, head, widow, age 42 on parish relief formerly ag. lab. wife, born in Farnsfield, NTT. Enumerated with Olive Bingham, Charles Bingham, George Bingham, Joseph Bingham, Emily Bingham, John Mosley and Richard Mosley. Why are the Mosley children shown as her in-laws? Presumably to differentiate between them and her children with her husband James Bingham. None of them make it into the "Estate of Joseph Bingham". Deliberate or oversight? I would say deliberate - the Mosley children were related to Joseph Bingham through his mother. Yes she married James Bingham and was Joseph's mother, but her children pre-marriage had no officially identified fathers - essentially illegitimate step-siblings so really stood no chance of being included.1
(Head) Cen-Househ7 April 1861 She was head of the household in the 1861 UK Census of Village, Boughton, NTT, as Sarah Bingham, head, widow age 52, housekeeper born Farnsfield, NTT. Enumerated with Emily Bingham.2
