Research Research:There is a surfeit of Thomas Kirk's born in Greasley around 1833-1835. I haven't put the effort into unpicking them at this time.

Thomas Kirk = Mary Phillips
However, father was Joseph Kirk (not Thomas Kirk). So 1871 cenus with Thomas in the Phillips household is not the right one.5

Nottingham Man's Lysol Suicide

Found by Football Spectator

Note on grass.

Asked wife to forgive him in hospital.

How a man who went on to a football field to see his son play found a man suffering from Lysol poisoning near a hedge was told the inquest at the Nottingham general Hospital, to-day, on Richard Leheup, 55, excise officer, of 50, Austin-Avenue, Nottingham.

Near the deceased a handkerchief and a note in his handwriting lay on the grass. In his pocket was a bottle of Lysol.

A verdict was recorded by the city coroner that he committed suicide by drinking lysol, whilst temporarily of unsound mind.

Mrs. Elizabeth Leheup, widow, said she last saw him alive at midday on Saturday, when she went out to visit a neighbour. On returning she found he was out, and later was informed that he was in hospital.

"Forgive Me"

Mrs. Leheup said that she visited her husband in hospital "He could just speak", she said "and he said 'Forgive me'. On Sunday he spoke just a little, and I said 'You will be pleased to come home again?' and he replied 'Yes, but I am of no use. I cannot sleep' ".

The widow stated that her husband had a nervous breakdown, which had lasted since October. He had only worked one week in that month, and had since then been at home. Although at times he seemes a bit better and fairly cheerful, he was worrying about office matters.

He had an idea that he had not been doing his work as he should have done, and that he had been slacking.13

Tragedy of Worry

Nottingham Man Poisoned in Field

How a man who went on to a football field to see his son play found a man suffering from Lysol poisoning near a hedge was told the inquest at the Nottingham general Hospital, yesterday, on Richard Leheup, 55, excise officer, of 50, Austin-Avenue, Nottingham.

Near the deceased, a handkerchief and a note in his handwriting lay on the grass. In his pocket was a bottle of Lysol.

A verdict was recorded by the city coroner that he "committed suicide by drinking lysol, whilst temporarily of unsound mind."

Mrs. Elizabeth Leheup, widow, said she last saw her husband alive at midday on Saturday, when she went out to visit a neighbour. On returning she found he was out, and later was informed that he was in hospital.

Mrs. Leheup said that she visited her husband in hospital "He could just speak", she said "and he said 'Forgive me'.

The widow stated that her husband had a nervous breakdown, which had lasted since October. He had only worked one week in that month, and had since then been at home. Although at times he seems a bit better and fairly cheerful, he was worrying about office matters.

He had an idea that he had not been doing his work as he should have done, and that he had been slacking.

Spectators Evidence

Albert Chapman, of 23 Bankcroft-Street, said that on Saturday afternoon , he went to Baker's field Hucknall-Road, at about 2.20 p.m. to see his son play.
When he got on to the field there were only about four spectators, and they directed his attention to a man, who was groaning, at the side of a hedge.
"They told me they had not been to him," said witness, "so I went across. I first of all saw a handkerchief and a note beside him. I read the note, and then one of two spectators started to come over, but no one assisted me, and I had to do it all myself".
Frank Whitham, of 42, Burn Street, a Customs and Excise surveyor, said that the deceased had been employed in his department and he had not been at work since October 25th as a result of ill health.
The note was then picked up by the coroner, who read "I shall never be able to start work again. I have not the nerve to carry on the work properly."

The coroner added that there were other statements in the note, and addressing the witness, said: "Was he doing his work all right up to leaving?"
"Yes" replied the witness "He was on sick leave, I have examined his books, and everything is in order."
The coroner observed that it was a clear case of a man suffering from ill health, and he had worried about his work and his future.
He seemed to imagine he would never be able to work again, or that his work had been unsatisfactory. The state of his health had caused him to be unduly depressed.15

in response to:
Hello Leivers people,
Sorry to but in, but I have a bit of info which may or may not be of interest to someone! I was doing a bit of research on Leivers myself, (although I am not related in any way).. because I have myself just moved to the Eastwood area of Nottingham, and bought a house which was built around 1913. I have recently acquired the original deeds, which show the original owner was one Alfred Leivers (in fact he was the one who had the house built), a collier, and after his death in 1957 it got passed on to his 2 sons, Geoffrey and William. I think there were various branches of the family in this area. Intriguingly, the author D H Lawrence, who famously hails from Eastwood, and at one time lived round the corner from where I currently live, has a family named Leivers in his novel Sons and Lovers. Could the real Leivers family have inspired him?
If anyone else has any more info on Alfred and his family, I would be interested!

Keith Leivers follow-up

This sounds like one of my father's uncles. Alfred was married to Elizabeth: in 1901 Dorothy was born, William and Geoff followed. Dorothy emigrated to Rhodesia (later Zimbabwe) causing sadness to her parents. William had one son Deryck who lives in Arnold.
Alfred was the eldest of 6 children from the marriage of William Leivers (born about 1853) and Alice Smetheringale. The others were Hannah, Frank, Henry (my grandfather), Emma and Thomas. Alice died in 1889. William took a second wife Sarah and reared more children:
Bryan, Alice, Polly, William and Hanford -there may have been more.
In 1901 11 of them were living on Lynncroft -in the same house!
Soon after Thomas took the train to Manchester and set up a family there.14
