Resch Note* Research Note:
I may have the wrong Arthur McGowan death, therefore giving an incorrect date of birth and find in Census. They are more numerous that I had suspected!
The one I found said he was "single", but was the only likely find in 1939 index. This one was likely born in Derby, not Essex. If he really was born in Essex, then I need to correct my information.

There is Hanford Leivers marrying one of:

Phoebe Meakin

However, the only Leivers lady buried in Greasley of suitable age 1851 - 1861 was Phoebe, age 30... which fits Phoebe Meakin. And of course there were lots of Meakin families in Hill Top.

They have plumped for
Christened: 6 Apr 1787 Place: Greasley, Nottingham, England
Parents:
Gregory Meakin, Sarah Rawson

cf:

14 Apr 1785, Joseph Meakin & Elizabeth Gregory

So why did I make the choice I did?

Probably due to age.
On first marriage, in Feb 1805, she would have been 17, instead of my 19.

OK - age at death may help here. Possibly. I don't have the burial at all in my Eastwood extractions (but I should, if the info on the web is correct).

There may be some mileage in Gregory Meakin & Sarah Rawson - as another child of theirs (John Meakin, 1785) marries Elizabeth Clifton - Samuel's sister?

John Meakin also a signatory at Martha's marriage.2

Resch Note Research Note:
I think I am right here, but not 100% convinced.

There is an Edwin Moses Morley (married to an Elizabeth, and born in Nottingham, - as Moses Edwin) who died in Mansfield around 1910. As this is a rare Edwin Morley of around the right age, this is a fair (but incorrect) assumption. Familysearch had Moses Edwin Morley bapt of Charles & Elizabeth in Nottm St Peter 29 Jun 1845

I do not believe that this Edwin - of Zaphnath and Mary - is the one born in Nottingham.

Parents marriage in Greasley

Zaphnathzpaaneah MORLEY of the parish of Eastwood (X) = Mary CHAMBERS (X)
In church after banns
16 Dec 1833
Wit: James CHAMBERS (X), Amy CHAMBERS (X) JG

However, something still not quite right, as his age at death and inconsistency with Edwin and Edward are concerning.

The child born 1844 was recorded as Edward (mother Chambers).

The Edwin who married Martha Clifton had a father Zaph.

Edwin had died by 1881 (as Martha was a widow then). It is the same woman, as she is with their child (Thomas Edwin Morley).
There is no Edwin death between 1871 and 1881, just an Edward, whose age is approximately right, and martial status reported at the pit accident is right. Martha is described as an annuitant widow in 1881 - i.e. she is receiving some kind of pension - which is consistent with a pit death where owners were responsible.

Certificates or baptisms clearly showing the parentage of "Edwin/Edward" would help.
Census and marriage is the main clue that Zaphnath is his father.

If only he had recorded his name as "Edward" on marriage and in census (and gave right age at death), then all would have been well...
