Mother | Hannah Leech1 b. 1815 |
Research* | Research: Not sure if this is the child of John & Hannah. Possible child of their daughter Sarah Ann? No possible GRO registration for a William Hooper of that birthdate mother surname Leach or no surname ... No baptism, in Aldsworth for a William illegitimately (apart for 1864 to Elizabeth Larman). Maybe an adopted son, born with a different surname??? A hint of illegitimacy suspected. Assumed "what we see in the 1871 census is true" set "connected" flag accordingly. | |

Elizabeth Ann Hopkins1
F, #2200, b. 28 December 1875, d. 13 December 1954
Research | Research: Possible info on Elizabeth's grandparents Wednesday, 6 September 1876, Derby Mercury 8439, SUDDEN DEATH AT BUXTON – On Wednesday evening an inquest was held at the Swan Inn, before Dr BENNETT, on the body of Mary HOPKINS, aged 67, the wife of Elisha HOPKINS, wine and spirit merchant, Eastwood, Nottingham. From the evidence, it appeared the deceased and her husband arrived at Buxton the previous evening from Eastwood, having driven over in their own conveyance. On Wednesday morning, the unfortunate lady had just finished her breakfast, and got up from her chair, when she fell back and immediately expired. The verdict returned was “Death from syncope”.2

Research* | 1913 | Research: Parents or relations of Elizabeth Ann Hopkins? (notes on Hopkins and D.H. Lawrence) (history of Hopkin's solicitors) "Hopkins Solicitors was founded in 1913 by Elijah Samuel Buxton Hopkins, known to his family and friends as Sam. The Hopkins family originally came from Eastwood, where Sam grew up in his mother's pub 'The Rising Sun Public House', based in the centre of Eastwood. A relation of Sam Hopkins was a Mr Willy Hopkins, a local Poet and good friend of Nottingham's own D H Lawrence, with Willy being mentioned in many of D H Lawrence's biographies. Sam became articulated at Hunt Dickens, a firm in Nottingham, before moving to London to be an Assistant Solicitor at Bailey, Shaw & Gillott. He placed his own plate up for the first time on the Westminster Bank buildings in Sutton-in-Ashfield in the year of 1913. In the 1920s, with his eldest son Raymond and Mr Robert Bosworth (who happened to be the son of the Bank Manager at Westminster Bank). Sam Hopkins opened his first branch in Mansfield, a small office on Leeming Street. Apart from being a local born Solicitor, Sam Hopkins was also a founding member of Mansfield Rotary Club and also started working for the Mining Union in 1926." Good try - but doesn't fit our "Elisha." The William Edward Hopkin (friend of D.H. Lawrence) was born 12 June 1862, son of Henry Hopkin. Henry was postmaster in Eastwood for 34 years until 1918. Enid Hilton, daughter of William and Sallie Hopkin, was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire in 1896. Her father was an outspoken radical, at the centre of a circle that included local workers, artists and writers. He was an important early influence upon D.H. Lawrence who had a lasting affection for Hopkin and his family. Enid Hopkin knew Lawrence as a child, and remained in contact after her marriage to Lawrence Hilton. She emigrated to the United States where she undertook social work among the native American communities in Ukiah, California.7 |

(Subject) Newspaper | 26 September 1949 | Mary Ward Horsley and James Leslie Shipstone were the subject of a newspaper article on 26 September 1949. Defamatory Notes sent to Judge and J.P. Nottingham Woman Charged under 1360 Act. Between 30 and 40 letters and postcards alleging corruption were stated to have been sent to a High Court judge, a Justice of the Peace for Nottingham, and members of a well-known city family, by a Nottingham housewife, at Nottingham guildhall today. Mrs. Betty Mildred King, 40, of 29 Bowers Avenue, was summoned for being a disturber of the peace , and being the writer of abusive and defamatory statements scandalising the Honourable Sir Wilfred Hubert Poyer Lewis, of the the H.M. Justices, and Mrs. Arthur Blount Lewis, J.P., of Nottingham. She pleaded guilty and was bound over to be of good behaviour and to keep the peace for five years in the sum of £25, with two sureties of £25. In default of the recognisances, Mrs. King was told she would be sent to prison for three months. Mr. R.O.F. Hickman, prosecuting, said King was being prosecuted under an Act of 1360. Involved in Court Actions. Defendant had been involved in two court actions during the past seven years, both of which she lost. The first was in 1941 at Nottingham, when her application for a maintenance order against her husband from whom she was separated. Mrs. Lewis was one of the magistrates on that occasion. Claim for Damages. The second was in 1943, when her claim for damages was dismissed in the High Court by Mr. Justice Lewis. Since February of this, Mrs. King was written between 30 and 40 abusive letters and postcards to Sir Wilfred Lewis, Mrs. Arthur Blount Lewis and Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Shipstone who, said Hickman "were a very well known Nottingham family". There was no relationship between Sir Hubert and Mrs. Lewis, but defendant was distantly related by marriage to the Shipstones and had been making defamatory statements about Mrs. Shipstone's Uncle. Not concerned in Case In her libel action at the High Court, defendant subpoenaed Mrs. Shipstone, although she was not concerned in the case in any way. Letters she had written to Mrs. Lewis and to Mrs. Shipstone accused them of corruption. "Since sending of the summons" said Mr. Hickman, "King had written to Mrs. Shipstone saying 'things' would be disclosed if steps were not taken to stop the prosecution." "The letters had been written with such frequency as to cause anxiety and distress to the parties concerned", he said. Mr. F.B. Pearce, for Mrs. King, said defendant had conducted her own case throughout the High Court action "which was extremely difficult". Written in same vein. It was because of the treatment she thought she had received, at that time, that she wrote the letters. The letters were written in more or less the same vein and did not vary much in their accusations and complaints, he said. Mrs. King had now obtained a maintenance order and was living with her mother. She realized her mistake and was very sorry for what she had done.20 |
Research* | before 2 August 1950 | Research: There is a divorce before either of them re-marry. As this is shortly after the court case, perhaps this is the revelations Mrs. King would unearth about "Mrs. Shipstone's Uncle"...? (not clear how she was related to either party - Betty Mildred King distantly related to Mrs. Shipstone - Mary Ward nee Horsley - and defamed her uncle). There was certainly a quick " parting of the ways" as James Leslie Shipstone re-married in just over a year from the court case, and Mary 5 years later. |

(Subject) Newspaper | 4 August 1950 | Mary Ward Horsley and James Leslie Shipstone were the subject of a newspaper article on 4 August 1950. Dorking News In the Divorce court on Wednesday last week, before Mr. Commissioner Bush James, K.C., Mrs. Mary Ward Shipstone, of Burford Bridge Hotel, Box Hill, near Dorking, petitioned for the dissolution of her marriage, charging her husband, James Leslie Shipstone, a company director, with adultery. He did not defend. There are two children of the marriage, which took place in January 1932. Petitioner's case was that until August 1948, the married life had been normally happy. Later her suspicions were aroused when her husband began to go out on his own. She alleged association with another woman and later, as she also alleged, he told her that he was in love with the woman. When seen by an enquiry agent, both he and the woman made statements admitting they were living together. A decree nisi was granted petitioner, with costs and custody of the two children.10 |

Research | September 1987 | Research: There is only one Mary Ward Arnold. As she matches the exact age of Mary Ward nee Horsley in 1939 census, (previously Shipstone, late Arnold), then this fits my hypothesis about her second marriage. Don't know where "Johnson" in the 1939 census came from, as she married Mr Arnold? Perhaps he had a different birth surname??5 |
