| (Child) Baptism | 25 December 1855 | He was baptised on 25 December 1855 at The Parish Church, Bisbrooke, RUT , Walter son of John & Eliza HARBUTT, Bisbrooke, Labourer. There are not two Walters (no evidence of another GRO birth registration, nor a burial). There is no other known child of thast surname at that time (i.e. name changed after baptism but before registration). So why is there a second baptisms? I have had double baptisms before, but usually in another church. Not that there were many folks being baptised in Bisbrooke every year ... this entry appears 4 below the first(!). Has a different curate sign it (which may be a clue). It is possible that the child was ill and they wanted to make sure he was baptised (but the vicar would have seen the entry on the same page ...?). Or previous vicar died so they thought the baptism wouldn't count? If the parents wanted to pay the money, the vicar did the job anyway!5 |

| (Deceased) Death* | 21 June 1830 | Ann HARPHAM died on 21 June 1830 at Mansfield Woodhouse, NTT , aged 40, and was pregnant at the time.9 |
| Interesting* | 21 June 1830 | Died whilst hanging out the washing (death by pigsty). Mrs. Ann Shipstone (my 3x gr grandmother) gave birth to my gt-gt-grandfather William Shipstone in 1823 and his brother James Shipstone in 1818, founder of the eponymous brewery in Nottingham (more of him later). Their father was James Shipstone of Darley Dale (who when his parents died was bound out as an apprentice by the parish as an FWK - a long story), the family was formally moved from Mansfield to Mansfield Woodhouse in case they becane a drain on the poor funds of Mansfield. Age 40, however, and heavily pregnant again, Ann (Nancy) still carried out her normal chores - which included putting out the washing. Unfortunately this required her to stand on the top of a pigsty (which a neighbour told her was unwise), and whilst doing this, she slid off. She landed on her feet, but with the pregnancy this caused her to rupture herself internally - a burst blood vessel - and she died of excessive bleeding within an hour and a half. A doctor arrived just before death, but could not save her. The moral of the tale is to take care when doing all tasks and never climb on pigsties especially when pregnant! Link: Ann HARPHAM. |
| (Subject) Newspaper* | 25 June 1830 | She was the subject of a newspaper article on 25 June 1830. Mansfield Yesterday an inquest was taken at the Ram Inn, Mansfield Woodhouse, before C. Swann, Gent, Coroner, on the body of Ann Shipstone, a married woman of about 40 years of age, who by slipping off a pigstye, where she was hanging out some clothes, burst a blood vessel internally, and died of excessive bleeding - verdict accordingly.10 |
| (Interred) Burial* | 25 June 1830 | She was buried on 25 June 1830 at The Parish Church, Mansfield Woodhouse, NTT ,Died age 40, named as Anne Shipstone, of Mansfield Woodhouse. Likely to be buried in churchyard - newer Welbeck Road burial ground opened much later - in 1863.11 |
| (Subject) Newspaper | 26 June 1830 | She was the subject of a newspaper article on 26 June 1830. Inquest Before C. Swann, Esq. - on Thursday at the house of Mr. Joseph Goulding, the sign of the Ram, at Mansfield Woodhouse on view of the lady Mrs. Ann Shipstone, aged 40. It appeared on evidence, that on Monday morning between six and seven o'clock, the deceased was hanging out washed clothes to dry, and for that purpose got upon a pig-stye, near the door, although warned by a neighbour of the danger of falling. She slipped off, and fell upon her feet, and ruptured a blood vessel in the vagina, which bled so profusely, as to cause her dissolution in an hour and a half. The poor woman was far advanced in pregnancy. Mr. Hurt, surgeon, of Mansfield, came in a few minutes before her death, but she was gone too far for any prospect of saving her. Verdict - died from excess of bleeding, occassioned by a fall.9 |

Note there is an alternate view that she is named as "Elizabeth Wagg" in an on-line genealogy. May be right... no evidence this is the case though. Unusual for a woman marrying at age 20 would already be a widow... Children's birth regisration states Harrison as mother's maidenname - QED.2 | |

| (Subject) Newspaper* | 23 January 1935 | Elizabeth Harrop and Richard Leheup were the subject of a newspaper article on 23 January 1935. Nottingham Man's Lysol Suicide Found by Football Spectator Note on grass. Asked wife to forgive him in hospital. How a man who went on to a football field to see his son play found a man suffering from Lysol poisoning near a hedge was told the inquest at the Nottingham general Hospital, to-day, on Richard Leheup, 55, excise officer, of 50, Austin-Avenue, Nottingham. Near the deceased a handkerchief and a note in his handwriting lay on the grass. In his pocket was a bottle of Lysol. A verdict was recorded by the city coroner that he committed suicide by drinking lysol, whilst temporarily of unsound mind. Mrs. Elizabeth Leheup, widow, said she last saw him alive at midday on Saturday, when she went out to visit a neighbour. On returning she found he was out, and later was informed that he was in hospital. "Forgive Me" Mrs. Leheup said that she visited her husband in hospital "He could just speak", she said "and he said 'Forgive me'. On Sunday he spoke just a little, and I said 'You will be pleased to come home again?' and he replied 'Yes, but I am of no use. I cannot sleep' ". The widow stated that her husband had a nervous breakdown, which had lasted since October. He had only worked one week in that month, and had since then been at home. Although at times he seemes a bit better and fairly cheerful, he was worrying about office matters. He had an idea that he had not been doing his work as he should have done, and that he had been slacking.13 |
| (Subject) Newspaper | 24 January 1935 | Elizabeth Harrop and Richard Leheup were the subject of a newspaper article on 24 January 1935. Tragedy of Worry Nottingham Man Poisoned in Field How a man who went on to a football field to see his son play found a man suffering from Lysol poisoning near a hedge was told the inquest at the Nottingham general Hospital, yesterday, on Richard Leheup, 55, excise officer, of 50, Austin-Avenue, Nottingham. Near the deceased, a handkerchief and a note in his handwriting lay on the grass. In his pocket was a bottle of Lysol. A verdict was recorded by the city coroner that he "committed suicide by drinking lysol, whilst temporarily of unsound mind." Mrs. Elizabeth Leheup, widow, said she last saw her husband alive at midday on Saturday, when she went out to visit a neighbour. On returning she found he was out, and later was informed that he was in hospital. Mrs. Leheup said that she visited her husband in hospital "He could just speak", she said "and he said 'Forgive me'. The widow stated that her husband had a nervous breakdown, which had lasted since October. He had only worked one week in that month, and had since then been at home. Although at times he seems a bit better and fairly cheerful, he was worrying about office matters. He had an idea that he had not been doing his work as he should have done, and that he had been slacking. Spectators Evidence Albert Chapman, of 23 Bankcroft-Street, said that on Saturday afternoon , he went to Baker's field Hucknall-Road, at about 2.20 p.m. to see his son play. When he got on to the field there were only about four spectators, and they directed his attention to a man, who was groaning, at the side of a hedge. "They told me they had not been to him," said witness, "so I went across. I first of all saw a handkerchief and a note beside him. I read the note, and then one of two spectators started to come over, but no one assisted me, and I had to do it all myself". Frank Whitham, of 42, Burn Street, a Customs and Excise surveyor, said that the deceased had been employed in his department and he had not been at work since October 25th as a result of ill health. The note was then picked up by the coroner, who read "I shall never be able to start work again. I have not the nerve to carry on the work properly." The coroner added that there were other statements in the note, and addressing the witness, said: "Was he doing his work all right up to leaving?" "Yes" replied the witness "He was on sick leave, I have examined his books, and everything is in order." The coroner observed that it was a clear case of a man suffering from ill health, and he had worried about his work and his future. He seemed to imagine he would never be able to work again, or that his work had been unsatisfactory. The state of his health had caused him to be unduly depressed.14 |

| (Subject) Newspaper* | 7 April 1923 | James Harrop and Arthur Leonard Smith were the subject of a newspaper article on 7 April 1923. Grave Nottingham Allegations Ex-Inspector Loses An Eye At the Nottingham Shire Hall to-day, Arthur Smith, of Sherwood, did not appear in answer to a summons alleging an assault on his father-in-law, James Harrop, formerly a Notts. police inspector, and brother of the late Deputy Chief Constable Harrop. Mr. F. Clayton, who prosecuted, said that on February 26th, defendant went to Mr. Harrop's house. It was obvious that he had come to quarrel, and Mr. Harrop, being apprehensive, took him away by the arm and tried to get him to go away, whereupon defendant struck him a violent blow to the eye. It happened that he was wearing a diamond ring, and this inflicted such a severe injury that the eye had to be removed, and Mr Harrop was in the infirmary for a month. Defendant had sent a note asking for the case to be postponed a fortnight as he was suffering from neurasthenia, but as no certificate was forthcoming, the bench issued a warrant for his apprehension. The police were requested, however, not to execute it if the illness proved to be real.25 |
| (Subject) Newspaper | 11 April 1923 | James Harrop and Arthur Leonard Smith were the subject of a newspaper article on 11 April 1923. "Like a Big Dog" Alleged Assault on Nottm. Ex-Police Officer Loss Of An Eye A serious case of assault by a Carlton man upon his Father-in-Law, an ex-police inspector, which is said to have resulted in the loss of an eye to the elder man, came before the magistrates at the Nottingham Shire Hall to-day. The defendant was Arthur Smith, a motorman, of Melrose-Road, Sherwood, and he pleaded not guilty to assaulting James Harrop of the Hollies, Carlton. Mr. F. Clayton, who prosecuted, said that the assault took place as long ago as February 26th, and on that day at about 2:30 in the afternoon. Harrop was in the garden of his house, when the defendant came there in a quarrelsome attitude. Realising this, Harrop tried to persuade his son-in-law to go away and got hold of his arm. Without any provocation or warning, the defendant broke away and struck Harrop a violent blow to the left eye. Defendant apparently was wearing a ring with a protruding setting, and the result was that the eyeball was cut, and had to be removed. Harrop was in the infirmary for nearly a month, and when he came out, took out a summons gainst defendant, returnable at the court on Saturday. Defendant did not appear, and after hearing a letter of explanation, the magistrate issued a warrant for Smith's arrest. Victim of Neurasthenia Harrop, giving evidence, said Smith came towards him in a very aggressive attitude, and kept walking round him like a big dog. He said to him "It's no use coming here to fall out Arthur. If you had only come to quarrel, you had better go." As soon as he took hold of son-in-law's elbow, he was struck a violent blow to the eye. In reply to the defendant , witness denied that he struck a blow first. John Robert Rhodes, aged 13, said he was in the garden at the time, gave corroborative evidence. Defendant, on oath, said he suffered from neurasthenia. On that day, he was sent down to the house by his wife. He entered the house in the best of spirits, it being his birthday, and kissed the old lady and the youngest daughter. As he was going through the kitchen door, his father-in-law passed out through the front door. He went out into the garden and when he had walked about four yards past his father-in-law, he said "Well, Arthur" and he replied "Well father, why didn't you speak to me last Saturday?" Harrop replied "I didn't want to speak to you then" and he replied, somewhat abruptly he admitted "Very well, I don't want to speak to you". His father-in-law told him to get out of gate. In a joking sort of way he said "you couldn't put me out". His father-in-law then came to him in a threatening attitude and aimed a blow at him. He warded it off with one arm and struck back in self defence with his right fist. He never wore a ring on his right hand. he regretted his father-in-law's loss of an eye. Smith then asked the magistrate to adjourn the case to enable him to call witnesses. The bench agreed, and adjourned the case until Saturday, bail being allowed.26 |
| (Subject) Newspaper | 14 April 1923 | James Harrop and Arthur Leonard Smith were the subject of a newspaper article on 14 April 1923. Ex-Inspector's Lost Eye Son-in-Law fined for violent assault The hearing was resumed today at Nottingham Shire Hall today of the charge of assault brought by James Harrop, of The Hollies, Carlton, against his son-in-law Arthur Leonard Smith, motorman, of Sherwood. It had been previously stated by the complainant who is an ex-inspector of the county constabulary that defendant struck him a violent blow on the left eye which necessitated its removal, and to-day Smith brought a cross-summons against Harrop. Smith made a statement to the effect that Harrop struck him first, and he merely struck-out in self defence. No one was more sorry than he that the sight of the eye had been lost. Cross-examined by Mr. F. Clayton, who represented Harrop, Smith said he struck Harrop with his right fist, and that the ring he wore was on his left hand. "you always strike with the right and guard with the left" added Smith. Mr. Clayton: You seem to know all about it. I don't know much about the noble art myself". Smith suggested that the damage to Harrop's eye was due to his knuckle. The Bench dismissed the summons against Harrop, and fined Smith 50s.27 |
