Howard and other Magistrates has several cases before him, arising out of excitement of the election at the petty sessions on Friday. In one of these, Lewis Tatam of Fleet, mechanic, was summoned for throwing stones so as to cause injury to property and danger to passengers on the road, at Long Sutton, on Jan 8th. Mr. M Merry of Spalding appeared for the defendant. P.C. Leachman said he saw defendant throw a stone which broke the window of Mr. Royce's car. Mr Merry said defendant absolutely denied this allegation and had four witnesses who asserted that the defendant never threw a stone at Mr. Royce's car, or anything at anybody. Witnesses on both sides having been heard, the Chairman said that in this prosecution their opinions were divided, and the case would therefore have to be dismissed."7 |
