| (Subject) Newspaper | 2 November 1970 | Sadie Doris Gartside or Williams was the subject of a newspaper article on 2 November 1970. Super Train Halts at The Pub for 20 Cigarettes The sleek 150 mph supertrain ground to a halt at the old village station. Out leapt one of the team who were testing it. He raced to the refreshment room and gasped "Twenty Cigarettes Please". Then he jumped back on the train - and off it went again. For the line was closed three years ago. The station - at Widmerpool, near Nottingham - was converted into a pub and restaurant. But now British Rail have re-opened the thirteen-mile stretch of line between Nottingham and Melton Mowbray to test their new prototype train. Scene Mrs. Sadie Shipstone, who helps run the converted station - now the Schooner Inn - said "It was like a scene from a Will Hay film. "The old station is in the middle of nowhere. It hasn't seen a train for months. "Then quite unexpectedly, four well-dressed chaps with rolled umbrellas turned up, presumably to watch the tests. "We expected the train to fly through. Instead, it stopped, the fellow jumped off and ran across for his cigarettes. He must have been gasping for a smoke." A British Rail spokesperson said "The track has been re-opened specifically to develop the new high speed train. Since there are no other users they can stop and start where they like. Indeed, stopping and starting will form part of the tests."2 |
