Resch Note*14 May 1795 Research Note: at Moulton, LIN,
A grazier, named Peter Petillion was buried on 14 May 1795.
He had a family including children (John 1745) in Weston

Peter Petilion Beeston was their second (known) son after John (who was named after his father).
Second son sometimes had the name of his paternal or maternal grandfather.

Perhaps William Beeston's mother (Elizabeth bn 1738) or Susannah Atkins' mother was a Petilion?

Maybe this was a condition of a Will, or maybe Peter Petilion was just a good friend to William, and he named his child in his honour.1

"Sherman's march to the sea"

"Sherman's March to the Sea (also known as the Savannah Campaign or simply Sherman's March) was a military campaign of the American Civil War conducted through Georgia from November 15 until December 21, 1864, by Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman of the Union Army. The campaign began with Sherman's troops leaving the captured city of Atlanta on November 15 and ended with the capture of the port of Savannah on December 21. His forces followed a "scorched earth" policy, destroying military targets as well as industry, infrastructure, and civilian property, disrupting the Confederacy's economy and transportation networks. The operation broke the back of the Confederacy and helped lead to its eventual surrender. Sherman's decision to operate deep within enemy territory and without supply lines is considered to be one of the major campaigns of the war, and is considered by some historians to be an early example of modern total war."5

Extract from: Obituary: Adams County, Wisconsin: Reuben BEESTON
(extracted from Adams County Press, Saturday June 27, 1903, Page 4 Column 2)

"Reuben BEESTON, for forty-seven years a resident of the town of Monroe, and one of the most prominent and influential farmers of the county, died at his home in that town last Friday evening, of creeping paralysis.

Mr. BEESTON was first stricken with the dread disease on April 21, 1890, and for the past six years had been confined to the house. During the last three months of his life he was entirely helpless. At about five o' clock Friday evening a marked change for the worse was noted in his condition, and he sank rapidly, passing away at ten o' clock.

For some time prior to his death he had been unable to speak above a whisper, but shortly before the end he regained his voice and spoke clearly and distinctly, calling the members of the family to his bedside to bid them farewell. His last words to the stricken family were: "God be with you 'till we meet again."

Reuben BEESTON was a native of England, having been born at Weston Hills, Lincolnshire, in that country, on March 6, 1827. He remained in the old country until twenty-three years of age, when he came to the States and purchased forty acres of farming land near what are now the limits of the great city of Chicago. Here, on March 6, 1852, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah A. WILLIAMSON.

In 1856, Mr. and Mrs. BEESTON came to this state and located in the town of Monroe in this county. For more than twenty-five years their home had been on the farm where Mr. BEESTON died.

Mr. BEESTON was a veteran of the War of the Rebellion, serving from November to July in the 17th Regiment, Co. E., 17th Brigade, and was with Sherman on his long march to the sea.

Mr. BEESTON enjoyed the greatest confidence and respect of his fellow townsmen, and was for many terms chosen by them as chairman of the town. He also for many years was one of the county poor commissioners, prior to the
election of Edward WILLIAMSON to the office, being compelled to resign on account of ill health.

For the past forty-seven years with every enterprise that tended to the development of the town of Monroe and the advancement of the public good has been found closely associated with the name of Reuben BEESTON--a name
revered by all his friends and on which his enemies, if such there be, could find no stain.

To Mr. and Mrs. BEESTON were born nine children--three sons and six daughters. Jane died in infancy; May at the age of three months; William Henry at the age of ten months. The six surviving children are--Mrs. Wm. WALKER of Friendship; George BEESTON of Chippewa Falls; Mrs. A. W. HORTON of Spring Creek; Mrs. W. E. SKINNER of Chicago; Susan BEESTON of Nekoosa, and Martin of Racine. All his children were at his bedside when he passed away, except George, Martin and Mrs. W. E. SKINNER.

Mr. BEESTON is also survived by his wife, by whose faithful, constant care during his long illness his life was prolonged.

Mr. BEESTON many years ago embraced the Methodist faith, and had ever remained a faithful and conscientious member of the church of his choice.

In his family relations he was most exemplary, and the influence of such a father is attested by the large family of children who have gone forth from that roof and are now leading useful, honorable lives in the great world outside.

Funeral services for Mr. BEESTON were held at the family home Sunday afternoon at one o' clock, conducted by Rev. Rob't Smith of Barnum, who chose for his text this passage: "And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, write, blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them."

The floral offerings were many and beautiful, among them being one of white rosebuds forming the word "Rest". The local choir furnished the appropriate music, and Mr. J. W. Gunning, of Friendship, assisted in the funeral arrangements.

The funeral services were largely attended, many being present from Necedah, Nekoosa and Friendship. More than forty carriages followed the remains to the Strongs Prairie cemetery, where, surrounded by his family and the friends and comrades of many years, he was laid at rest to await the summons of Him, to whom with the dying breath he commended his family till they meet again."9

Death of Adams County pioneer

Reuben Beeston died at his home in the town of Munroe on Friday June 19, 1903, after a lingering illness of creeping paralysis.

Mr. Beeston was born in Weston Hills, Lincolnshire, England on March 6, 1827 and came to the United Stages in 1850. In 1852, he was joined in marriage to Sarah A. Williamson and lived in Chicago for a short time. In 1856, he came to Wisconsin and located in the town of Monroe, Adams County. He enlisted during the war of the rebellion and served about ten months, making the march with Sherman to the sea, serving in the 17th Reg. Co. E.

The fruits of the above marriage were nine children, three of whom, Jane, Henry & Mary died in infancy. The widow with the other six children survive him, viz: Mrs. Wm. Walker of Friendship, George of Chippewa Falls, Mrs. A. W. Horton of Spring Creek, Mrs. W. E. Skinner of Chicago, Susan of Nekoosa and Martin of Racine.

Mr. Beeston was first stricken with the disease which finally caused his death in 1890. For the last six years he has been confined to the house with creeping paralysis and for the last three months was completely helpless. During all this time he bore troubles and sufferings patiently and with christian fortitude and only by the faithful, constant and watchful care of his wife
was the spark of life retained and his earthy existence prolonged. At the time of his death, all his children were present except George, Martin & Mrs. Skinner. Death came at 10 o'clock p.m. last Friday.

He was a christian gentleman having been a member of the Methodist church since the 50's and died in the faith. As a citizen he commanded the highest respect of all who knew him, as a friend he was loved and respected by all. In the home where known best he was he most loved and will he be most missed. During his residence in the town of Munroe he had many times filled the office of chairman and also had been one of the County poor commissioners filling every office of trust conscientiously and scrupulously performing his duty as he understood it.

Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday at one o'clock p.m. the Rev. Mr. Smith officiating. The interment was in Strongs Prairie cemetery -

Resch Note*between 1849 and 1850 Research Note:
Two marriages in FreeBMD.
Jun 1849 Spalding = Elizabeth Andrew
Dec 1850 Spalding = Elizabeth Woolley
Both have "Elizabeth" wives.

However, Elizabeth Andrew is more likely because their first child is registered in Jun 1850 - before the marriage to Elizabeth Woolley in Oct-Dec 1850.

Birth of "George Hilton" not found in GRO registrations.
Possibly because he was born before his parent's marriage.
Not in 1861 census so has to be between 7 Apr 1861 and 18 Aug 1862 if so..

Possibly George Bell, M 1862, mother - R.D. Lincoln

No George Bells born in Holbeach during this time. Apart from George Hilton Bell - duh! (but ...)

Dropped enough clues for me to piece together...2

Is this his entry (yes)? Mother surname odd ... Jane Bell was a Spinster so should be "-" ... maybe she did as someone else also did, and put her mother's maiden name?

Indeed. Her mother was a Mallet before she married.
