(Subject) Newspaper* | 5 October 1917 | He was the subject of a newspaper article on 5 October 1917. (There aren't many George Varney's around in this area, and the address is bang-on) A Bogus Club Nottingham Premises Struck off the Register A visit to the Working Men's Unionist Club and Institute, Forman Street, by the police had its sequel at the Nottingham guildhall this afternoon, when an application was made for it to be struck off the register. The steward, Charles Hallam, was summoned as representing the club, and there were summonses against William Johnson, of Cope Street Radford, and George Varney, of Kimbolton Avenue, for drinking intoxicating liquor during prohibited hours. For the prosecution, Mr. R. B. Clayton stated that the ground of the application was that the club had not acted in good faith, and that illegal sales of intoxicating liquor had taken place. The club was supposed to be for the moral and intellectual improvement of the members, and carried on according to certain rules, but not one of these had been complied with, either by the club or the steward. ... On the night of Monday, September 3rd, about 1.40, Inspector Wild and Sergeants Ash and Good visited the premises, which should have been closed for the sale of intoxicants at nine o'clock, and at the back they heard voices, one of which said "Put the whiskey in the cupboard". The officers eventually got inside, and found Hallam and the other two men. On the table was a glass containing whiskey, and later the cupboard was opened and another glass found inside. Hallam, who said he was secretary, gave the excuse that since the war broke out he had not been able to keep the book of the club, which, added Mr. Clayton, was essentially of a bogus character. ... The club was struck off, Hallam being ordered to pay £4 4s. costs, and the other summonses being withdrawn on payment of £1 1s. in each case.7 |
(Subject) Newspaper | 15 February 1922 | He was the subject of a newspaper article on 15 February 1922. Bakery and The Boy Contravention of the Factory Acts Employer's Dilemma A baker's dilemma regarding the difficulty of exhibiting in his premises an abstract of the conditions governing juvenile labour was explained at the Nottingham police court today, when a defendant pleaded guilty in three instances to contravention of the Factory and Workshops Acts, 1901 and 1911. George Varney, of 48 Boden Street, was summoned for employing a youth in his bakery, contrary to the provisions of the acts. He was further summoned for not having affixed at his premises an abstract of the Acts, and for employing the young person for more than seven work days without having obtained from the certifying surgeon of the district a certificate of fitness for his employment. It was stated that the boy was employed at defendant's bakery, and when an inspector visited the premises on January 21st, it was found that the lad began work that day at 5:15 a.m. No abstract of the Act as to the condition of employment of juveniles was exhibited, although a copy of the same had been sent to defendant as long ago as May last year, and it was found to be still in the envelope in which it was sent. Not exploiting the boy Mr. R.A. Young, who defended, said his client was not very large in the way of business, ad employed only one man and a boy. It was true that the abstract was sent to defendant, who had been on the horns of a dilemma because he thought that his premises should be thoroughly up-to-date as far as cleanliness was concerned. The walls were lines with white enamel bricks. No nails, therefore could be driven in on which to hang the abstract, and the latter could not be glued on because of the frequent washing of the walls. Since the visit of the inspector, however he had mounted the paper on a card, and got over the difficulty by suspending it from a gas bracket. As far as the failure to have the boy examined was concerned, that was neglected owing to ignorance of the law. The lad had since been seen by a doctor, who certified his fitness for work, which showed that the defendant has not evaded the Acts because the youth was not medically fit. The boy, who had no parents, lived with his sister, and had been given a little overtime which consisted of merely watching flour falling through a sieve, and reporting when the latter became choked. By doing that little job he was provided with some pocket money and defendant thought he was doing him a good turn. The Chairman (Mr. H. D. Snook, who was accompanied by Dr. W. Hunter) said the Bench were satisfied that the defendant was not exploiting the lad in any way. He would be dealt with leniently, and have to pay a fine of 10s.8 |

Note* | Unsure who this person is (Mum didn't seem to remember them). Appears on Estate account of Mary Ellen Vincent (deceased) as A.R. Vincent. Possibly Roy Vincent, but he is believed to have died as a teenager (in 1940's). Unsure where 'Raymond' came from - was this a mistranscription of 'Roy'? No. Probably not. (Witness) Anecdote | 20 February 1976 | Donald Arthur Vincent was a witness Dear Margaret & Paul, thank you for christmas card, sorry if I did not send you one. I've not felt like it since I lost Reg. I do miss him. He was so good to me. Last year I was ill I had to stay at Don's four months. As you will see Margaret, I sold (19) Cedars. It nearly broke my heart. It was the big garden. Don said he could do it, he didn't want me to sell it. He's got more garden than that, so he would not have been able to keep it up. So I've got a small bungalow about (2 m m) from Irene & Don. Irene wanted me nearer, they both been very good to me. So I do hope Ive done the right thing Reg would not have sold it. I hope you and Paul & the boys are well. I expect Tony & Philip are getting quite grown up. My kind regards to Paul. Irene also sends her regards to you. I would be pleased to see you any time. Margaret I don't suppose you come this way much. I don't expect you to write back. Just wanted you to know I had not forgot you. All the best to you. My Love Norah. V.10 |
