Local Weddings

Miss A.C. Shipstone and Mr. A.L. Wing

There was a numerous company at St. Andrew's Church, Nottingham, today, to witness the nuptials of Miss Alice Christabel Shipstone, the third daughter of Mr. James Shipstone, of Northlands, Magdala-road, and Mr. Arthur Leslie Wing, the second son of Mr. William Wing, of Sheffield. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of Brussels point lace, veiled with ivory chiffon on chiffon taffeta, and had a veil of white tulle, surmounting a wreath of orange blossom. There were four bridesmaids, Miss Husband, Miss Turner, Miss Warwick and Miss Wing, who were gowned in pale mousseline de soie, trimmed with champagne point de Navarre lace, with deep swathes of tapetta chiffon, and they carried bouquets of sweet peas. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. H.H. Wing, of Sheffield, the best man. The Rev. F.R. Pyper, vicar of St. Andrew's conducted the ceremony, and Mr. F. Wyatt (in the absence of Dr. Corbett, the St. Andrew's organist), played several compositions, including Mendelsohn's Wedding March. A breakfast was served in a marquee on the lawn of Northlands, and later in the day Mr. and Mrs. Wing left for Scotland. The bride's travelling costume was of pale fawn souple cloth, tailor-made, with a little bolero disclosing a veil of pale blue chene?, gold tissue being introduced. There was a striking display of wedding presents.9

Tollerton Plane Tragedy

Young Airman Killed Instantly.

Two Somersaults.

Tragic Week-end visit to Nottingham.

A young airman was instantly killed when a machine belonging to the Nottingham Aero Club crashed into a ploughed field near Cotgrave yesterday.

He was Mr. Ronald Leslie Wing, 20, a member of a well known Nottingham family, who had taken the machine out from Tollerton Aerodrome.

Mr. Wing was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Leslie Wing, of Coldwell-Road, Sheffield, and a nephew of Mr. Ronald Shipstone.

He was staying during the weekend at Reigate House, Cyprus Road, Mapperley Park.

Yesterday afternoon Mr. Wing, who was a qualified pilot, arrived at Tollerton from Nottingham, took off in a single-seater Moth, and flew at a fairly low altitude over the Cotgrave district.

Shortly after 4 o'clock he was flying at a height estimated by an eye witness as not more than 100 feet over Cotgrave Place, when he made a sharp left-hand turn, and in doing so seemed to lose flying speed. The machine rolled over twice, nose-dived, and crashed to earth within 30 yards of the main road.

On striking the ground, the plane turned two complete somersaults and was totally wrecked, the engine embedding itself into the ground some feet from the body of the machine.

People who witnessed the crash and rushed to the scene found Mr. Wing still strapped to his seat amongst the wreckage.

Eye-Witness's Story

According to eye-witnesses, the machine had been making circular flights over Cotgrave Place for some time. It had maintained a fairly low altitude, but, with the engine running normally and the machine steady in flight, nothing untoward was expected, and casual onlookers were horrified when in turn the machine suddenly rolled and crashed.
Mrs. Steward who lives in a cottage within a short distance of where the crash occurred told a "Post" representative that she was in the garden at the time. "We get used to the machines coming over from Tollerton," she said, "and take very little notice as a rule."
"The Moth machine that came over this afternoon seemed to be taking a normal course and flying steady, but the altitude seemed to me to be rather low. When the left hand turn was made, and the wing dipped, I thought at first that the pilot was going to stunt, but when the machine rolled over, and gave another roll, I realised that it was our of control. The low altitude gave the pilot no chance to recover, and the machine developed a nose dive and crashed at terrific speed."
The machine, added Mrs. Stewart, struck the ground with such a force that it bounced up again, and then turned two somersaults.

Keen Airman

Mr. Ronald Shipstone told a "Post" representative last night that his nephew was extremely keen on flying, and although he secured his certificate, only a few weeks ago, he seemed quite at home in any kind of machine. He was educated at Malvern, and was learning to be a brewer, being articled with a Falkirk firm.
He made frequent visits to Nottingham, and never lost an opportunity of going to Tollerton for a flight.
Mr. Wing was a member of the Croydon Aero Club, and some six months ago he made a daring parachute descent from an aeroplane at a height of some 4,000 feet.
The inquiry will probably be held tomorrow.

Missing Handbag

Miss Muriel Robinson, who was one of the first to go to the aid of the injured pilot, informed the "Post" to-day that when the accident happened she rushed in her car to the opposite side of the aerodrome, and left it to go to the scene of the crash. When she returned and hour and a half later she found that her handbag had been stolen.
The bag contained her Air Ministry licence and the Royal Aero Club licence, which she is particularly anxious to recover, and some two or three pounds in money. There were a large number of people about at the time.

Tollerton Air Tragedy

Inquest Story of Crash

Young Man's vertical Dive to Death

"Accident" verdict

Theory that Pilot lost control of Plane

How a young pilot flying an aeroplane belonging to the Nottingham Aero Club, at Cotgrave on Sunday afternoon, crashed to death from a low altitude a few minutes after leaving Tollerton Aerodrome, was described at the inquest this afternoon on Ronald Leslie Wing, the 20-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Leslie Wing, of Coldwell Lane, Sheffield.

Mr. Wing was a nephew of Mr. Ronald Shipstone, of Reigate House, Cyprus Road, Mapperley, and he was a well-known Nottingham pilot, who was frequently seen at Tollerton.

The inquest was conducted by Colonel H. Bradwell, who sat with a jury at the Manvers Arms, Cotgrave, the witnesses including several experts on aeronautical construction.
The aeroplane, which Mr. Wing was flying solo, was seen to turn sharply after losing flying speed, and then to nose dive, burying itself into the ground a short distance from the main road. The pilot was dead when extracted from the wreckage.
Major S. J. V. Fill was present as a representative of the Accident Branch of the Air Ministry. Mr. J. Reed was the foreman of the jury.

At the outset, the Coroner reminded the jury that they were only concerned in coming to a conclusion as to the cause of death, and he thought they would have no doubt upon this point.
The Air Ministry, quite rightly he thought always sent a representative on these occasions to assist them with their experience in helping to prevent these unfortunate happenings.

Living In Nottingham

Arthur Leslie Wing, a chartered accountant, of 39 Coldwell-Lane, Sheffield, and father of the deceased, gave formal evidence of identification. He said his son was living with a relative of Reigate, Mapperley Park, Nottingham, and by occupation he was a brewer's pupil.
He was a qualified air pilot, and was very keen on flying.
The deceased's pilot's certificate was handed to the Coroner at this point, and he remarked that it was issued by the Air Ministry on Sept. 3rd.
The deceased's log book was also examined by Major Fill, who observed that deceased had flown quite a lot.

"Perhaps it is Stunting"

Mrs. Gertrude Stewart, a farm labourer's wife of Shepherd's Houses, Cotgrave, said she was in her garden about 4 p.m. on Sunday when she saw an aeroplane flying towards Tollerton aerodrome.
"I said to my daughter: 'That aeroplane looks very low, but perhaps it is stunting' " said the witness.
"It then took a sharp turn to the left, toppled over twice and crashed to the ground.
"It dived into a ploughed field next to my house.
"That was the only time I had seen it that afternoon."
The Coroner: Was the engine running? - Yes, right until the crash
Was there any back-firing or explosions? - No
What opinion did you form? - I could only think that the pilot had lost control.

"Level Headed"

Mrs. Grace Richardson, of the Chestnuts, Kenilworth Road, Nottingham, a qualified pilot, said she was at the aerodrome on Sunday afternoon. She was sitting in her car outside the hangar when she saw Wing in the air. He was a good level-headed fellow, and not the sort of man she would have thought would do anything foolish. She did not see him go up, but she first noticed the machine flying very high across the aerodrome at the bottom end. Wing would the be at a height of about 1,500 feet, which technically was considered a very safe height.
"I noticed that he went to the left, still keeping his height, then he did a right-handed turn and commenced to glide. I thought he was going to glide into land, but he suddenly dived very steeply from a great height", said Mrs. Richardson.

Vertical Dive

She added that Wing seemed to dive almost vertically, and when within 500 feet of the ground he turned to the right and then to the left, and in turning, tried to straighten up. He then fell out of her vision behind a line of trees.
The Coroner: was there any reason why he should have dived in this way?
Witness: not as steeply as that.
Did it strike you at that time there was anything in the way he was gliding? - Yes
Mrs. Richardson said that Wing seemed to straighten up after he had fallen 1,000 feet, and she thought he was then all right, but then he turned towards the aerodrome.
Capt. Ronald J. Shepherd said he had been in charge of the aerodrome since September 1929. Wing passed his test as a qualified pilot on July 1st last. It was laid down, by the National Flying Services, that after this should be a minimum of eight hours' dual flying, and a minimum of five hours solo flying.
He considered Wing to be a very good pilot. He had never known him to take risks and he was always ready to ask witness's advice.
Captain Shepherd said he saw Wing on Sunday afternoon before he went up.
"I warned him about coming in too slowly as it might get rather bumpy owing to the wind." he said. "He then appeared to be perfectly well and the machine was quite in order."
Witness had flown it three times that morning. As far as he had been able to tell from an examination after the smash, the aeroplane was quite in order. He had not been able to find anything mechanically wrong with the machine.
Wing left the aerodrome at ten minutes to four, witness having flown it for 20 minutes himself an hour before. Wing had been 15 minutes in the air when the crash occurred.
The Coroner: Can you give us any explanation as to what may have happened to cause this diving and loss of control?

Captain Shepherd: To my mind, it was obviously a case of loss of control, but it is rather a mystery as to where it started, whether he had control when he dived and did not lose it until he was 500 feet from the ground.

Captain Shepherd then went on to say that if the pilot had got below a certain speed, his machine would be liable to develop a spin, but he did not think that Wing did lose his correct flying speed owing to the way that the machine struck the ground.
It seemed to come to earth at a terrific speed, and it was very badly smashed, the engine being separated from the fuselage.
He added that if the machine stalled, it would turn of its own account, but it would not turn at a high speed unless Wing had taken his hands off the controls.
Capt. Shepherd said when he got to the scene of the crash, Wing was still strapped to his seat lying on his back in the wreckage. His hands were on his chest, and he was dead.
Answering the Coroner, Capt. Shepherd said that other than Wing, he was the only one who flew the aeroplane as pilot that day.
He gave it as his opinion that the machine landed upside down and gradually twisted round to the right way after the smash.

(continued in side column to the left on the same page)

Answering a juryman, Capt. Shepherd said it was quite possible for such an aeroplane to be flown with the pilot taking both hands and feet off the controls. It could be flown for some time in that way without danger.
Frank Purnell of 3 Cromford Road, West Bridgford, the ground engineer at Tollerton aerodrome, said it was his duty to inspect the aircraft each day and issue certificates to the effect that the machines were airworthy.
He saw Wing before he went up. He regarded him as a good pilot.
Summing up, the Coroner said he did not think they could carry the case any further, the representative of the Air Ministry having told him that from his investigations he was satisfied that the machine was in order.
"You can say no more than he was accidentally killed, and we shall never know what really happened, however long we sit, added Col. Bradwell.

The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death", the foreman stating that they desired to express their satisfaction that everything was in perfect order with regard to the condition of the machine, and they considered that no one was to blame.
