Note that Earl Cowper was the owner of much land in and around Greasley, including the land which John Leivers (no know relation - yet) bought from him at Haggs Farm as part of the enclosure of Greasley in 1870s. There were protests in 1878, and John Leivers had to take legal action.2 | |

| Research | between 1 October 1881 and 31 December 1881 | Research: Do not know who Henry's parents were (but we are given the name of a father). Registered as "Henry Clifton" in 1891 with grandfather Cooper Clifton, as "Henry C Knighton". In 1901 with father Cooper Clifton, as simply "Henry Clifton". His marriage certificate is not clear. His name was Henry Clifton (illeg) - the "Illeg" probably being Knighton. His father's name Henry Clifton was crossed-out and replaced with Knighton. Indexed as Clifton. in 1911 named as Henry Clifton. There is a Henry Knighton age 18 (bn 1863), born Eastwood, living Beggarlee Breach (with parents family) in 1881. If his father was indeed Henry Knighton, then his mother must have been a Clifton girl. There are only 2 candidates. Martha is already married (in 1877), and has children in 1880 and 1882. The other - Elizabeth Ann - only 13/14. Marriage in 1901 states his father to be dead. Can't find 1863 Eastwood Henry Knighton after 1881. Humm. If instead his Mother was a Knighton, then the main suspect is William (Walter is only 16), who could have made a Knighton woman pregnant before he married Phoebe Straw in 1881. In any case, to be a grandson of Cooper Clifton, he must be the son of one of Cooper's children - one of the 4 we know about, or he had an illegitimate child called Henry with a Miss Knighton before his marriage in 1859 (can't find child or baptism)? Hummm. So 3 main theories. 1: Son of William Clifton by a Knighton girl. Theory has it that William (son of Cooper) made a Knighton girl pregnant before he married Phoebe. That's why the child isn't living with his father - it was his responsibility, but his wife didn't want to bring up somebody else's child, so grandparents look after him.. It's a good theory, anyway... 2. Son of youngest daughter of Cooper Clifton - who would have been 13/14 at the time. 3. Cooper Clifton had an illegitimate son Henry Knighton (so far untraced), who was the father. Take your pick. Birth certificate might shed light. |
| (Head) Cen-Househ | 5 April 1891 | He was head of the household in the 1891 UK Census of 39 Breach, Eastwood, NTT , as Cooper Clifton, head, married, age 53, coal miner, employed, born Eastwood NTT. Enumerated with his wife Elizabeth Stapleton, William Clifton, Samuel Smith, Elizabeth Ann Clifton, Lewis Smith and Henry Knighton Clifton. Next door to Bradley family, so Lewis Bradley Smith's name (the lodger) may have some bearing on neighbours..? And Elizabeth Ann married a Samuel Smith in 1884.14 |
