Bigamy Charge Dismissed A charge of bigamy against Lily Stenson (49), of 83, Sycamore Crescent, Kimberley, which was preferred at the Nottingham Guildhall yesterday, was dismissed. Mr. McSkimming (solicitor to the Corporation) who prosecuted, said Stenson was married at Basford Registry Office and the child of the marriage died when only 12 months old. The couple parted after three months of married life. The husband would say he had not seen his wife since 1920. In July 1937, accused went through a form if marriage at Basford Register Office with a man named Ferdinand Garton. When cautioned and charged by the police accused said: "That's quite right, but since I married Garton I have heard that Robert Stenson has died." Garton told the police: "We both knew Bob Stenson was alive but we thought the marriage was void after 19 years' separation" When Robert Stenson, the husband, went into the witness box he said: "I do not want to say anything." Mr. McSkimming said in those circumstances he would have to withdraw the case. Mr. Frank Clayton, for defendant asked for a formal discharge, Mentioned Ferdinand Garton.8 |
